Selector Mechanism, Removing And Installing: Removing
-- Move the selector lever to "P".
-- Remove the selector lever handle (refer to SELECTOR LEVER HANDLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING ) and disconnect the connector -2- from the cover while doing so.
-- Remove the center console. Refer to CENTER CONSOLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the selector mechanism to the vehicle wiring harness.
-- Remove the engine cover. Refer to ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING (CPLA, CPPA, CPKA, CPRA) or ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING (DDSA, DDSB) .
-- Remove the air filter housing. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING (CPLA, CPPA, CPKA, CPRA) or AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING (DDSA, DDSB) .
-- To remove the selector lever cable from the transmission, first release the cable in direction of -arrows 1- and then remove it from the cable bracket in direction of -arrow 2-.
Do not use pliers because the mounting tabs on the cable bracket could break off.
Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
-- Pry the cable -1- off the selector lever -3- using an open end wrench -2-, for example.
-- Disengage the selector lever cable -1- from the bracket -arrow- on the transmission.
-- Raise the vehicle.
-- Remove the front and rear tunnel braces from the body. Refer to TUNNEL BRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Risk of damaging the decoupling element.
- Do not bend the decoupling element more than 10°.
- Do not place any load on the decoupling element.
- Do not damage the wire mesh on the decoupling element.
-- Remove the front exhaust pipe with the catalytic converter. Refer to OVERVIEW - EMISSIONS CONTROL (CPLA, CPPA, CPKA, CPRA) or OVERVIEW - EMISSIONS CONTROL SYSTEM (DDSA, DDSB) .
-- Disengage the center and rear mufflers from the retaining loops and secure them to the body with wire, for example. Refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER (CPLA, CPPA, CPKA, CPRA) or OVERVIEW - MUFFLER (DDSA, DDSB) .
-- Remove the lock washers -arrows- and remove the center tunnel heat shield -1- under the gearshift mechanism.
-- Lower the underbody trim panel on the inside just enough until the center tunnel heat shield -1- can be removed.
-- If equipped, remove the damper for the tunnel -1-.
A second technician is required under the vehicle to remove the selector mechanism.
-- If equipped, remove the Access/Start System Antenna 1 in Vehicle Interior -R138- -2- from the front nuts. Refer to ACCESS/START SYSTEM ANTENNA 1 IN VEHICLE INTERIOR -R138-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
The illustration above shows the gearshift mechanism for a manual transmission.
-- Remove the rear nuts -3- and remove the center console support -1-.
-- Then remove the front nuts -3- for the gearshift housing.
The selector mechanism can also be removed without having to remove the selector housing.
To do this, remove the four bolts. Refer to -Item ) OVERVIEW - SELECTOR MECHANISM - List Item: Bolt.
Remove the selector mechanism with the selector lever cable in the vehicle interior in the direction of the -arrow-.
The selector mechanism is available only together with the selector housing and selector lever cable. Refer to the Parts Information.
