Selector Mechanism, Removing And Installing: Removing

-- Move the selector lever into "P".

-- Remove the selector lever handle and disconnect the connector -2- from the cover while doing so. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER HANDLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the center console. Refer to CENTER CONSOLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the selector mechanism to the vehicle wiring harness.

-- Remove the engine cover, if necessary. Refer to ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING (CPLA, CPPA, CPKA, CPRA) .

-- Remove the complete air filter housing:

-- Remove the lock washers -A and B-. The lock washers must later be replaced when adjusting cable.

Loosen the adjusting screw -arrow-.

NOTE:

Use pliers to remove the lock washer -B- from the cable bracket. Do not use a sharp-edged lever. Otherwise the selector lever cable could get damaged.

-- Raise the vehicle.

-- Remove the front and rear tunnel braces from the body. Refer to TUNNEL BRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

CAUTION:

There is a danger of causing damage to the decoupling element.

  • Do not bend the decoupling element more than 10°.
  • Do not load the decoupling element.
  • Do not damage the wire mesh on the decoupling element.

-- Remove the front exhaust pipe with the catalytic converter. Refer to OVERVIEW - EMISSIONS CONTROL (CPLA, CPPA, CPKA, CPRA) .

-- Disengage the center and rear mufflers from the retaining loops and secure them to the body with wire, for example. Refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER (CPLA, CPPA, CPKA, CPRA) .

-- Remove the lock washers -arrows- and remove the center tunnel heat shield -1- under the gearshift mechanism.

-- Lower the underbody trim panel on the inside just enough until the center tunnel heat shield -1- can be removed.

-- If equipped, remove the damper for the tunnel -1-.

NOTE:

A second technician is required under the vehicle to remove the selector mechanism.

-- If equipped, remove the Access/Start System Antenna 1 in Vehicle Interior -R138- -2- from the front nuts. Refer to ACCESS/START SYSTEM ANTENNA 1 IN VEHICLE INTERIOR -R138-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

NOTE:

The illustration above shows the gearshift mechanism for a manual transmission.

-- Remove the rear nuts -3- and remove the center console support -1-.

-- Then remove the front nuts -3- for the gearshift housing.

NOTE:

The selector mechanism can also be removed without having to remove the selector housing.

To do this, remove the four bolts -item  ) OVERVIEW - SELECTOR MECHANISM - List Item: Bolt.

Remove the selector mechanism with the selector lever cable inside the vehicle interior in the direction of -arrow-.

The selector mechanism is available only together with the selector housing and selector lever cable. Refer to the Parts Information.
