General Repair Information: Notes
- The highest level of care and cleanliness along with tools that function properly are required to ensure a proper and successful transmission repair. Of course the general safety precautions also apply when carrying out repair work.
- Some general repair information that applies to several procedures throughout this repair information is summarized here. They apply to this service information.
Guided Fault Finding , OBD and Test Instruments
- Try to determine the exact cause of damage using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester before performing repair work on the transmission.
Special Tools
A complete list of special tools and workshop equipment used in the repair information can be found at the beginning of each repair section and in the Workshop Equipment and Special Tools Service Information.
Transmission
- Do not run the engine when the cover is removed from the transmission or when there is no transmission fluid in the transmission. Do not tow the vehicle.
- Make sure that the alignment sleeves between the engine and transmission are positioned correctly when installing the transmission.
Transmission Fluid, Environmental and Disposal Regulations.
The quality of transmission fluid is crucial to transmission function.
- Shake the fluid containers before opening.
- Do not mix additives into the transmission fluid. Do not fill with a different transmission fluid.
- The drained transmission fluid must not be used again.
- Dispose of drained transmission fluid correctly.
- Follow all legal environmental and waste disposal regulations.
- Pay attention to the information on the fluid packaging.
Drain and Check Plug
A plastic overflow tube is located behind this bolt -arrow- (with 8 mm hex socket head). Its length determines the fluid level in the transmission.
O-rings, Gaskets and Seals
- O-rings, gaskets and seals must always be replaced.
- Flange shaft, and selector shaft seals are illustrated as sealing rings.
- After removing the gaskets and seals, check the contact surface on the housing or shaft for burrs or damage resulting from removal.
- Before installing the gasket, lightly oil and fill the space between the sealing lips -arrow- halfway with Grease.
- The open side of the gaskets point towards the fluid to be sealed in.
- Coat the O-rings with transmission fluid or Vaseline before inserting to prevent them from being crushed during assembly.
- Do not use any other lubricants in the transmission fluid area. Otherwise there is a danger of the hydraulic transmission control malfunctioning.
Circlips
- Do not stretch the circlips.
- Replace damaged or stretched circlips.
- The circlips must rest at the bottom of the groove.
Bolts and Nuts
- Loosen or tighten bolts and nuts on the covers or housings diagonally.
- The tightening specifications given apply to unoiled bolts and nuts.
- Use a wire brush to clean the threads of the bolts that were installed with locking fluid. Insert the bolts with Locking Fluid.
- The threaded holes in which the self-locking bolts or bolts coated with locking fluid were installed must be cleaned (for example, with a thread tap). Otherwise there is the risk that the bolts could break off when they are removed again.
- Always replace self-locking bolts and nuts.
