General Repair Information
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2021 Audi e-tron Quattro and 2019 Audi e-tron Quattro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
The highest level of care and cleanliness along with tools that function properly are required to ensure a proper and successful transmission repair. Of course the general safety precautions also apply when carrying out repair work.
General information that applies to various different repair procedures is listed here instead of repeating it multiple times throughout the information. They apply to this repair information.
Special Tools
- Refer to Workshop Equipment and Special Tools for a complete list of special tools used in the repair information.
Oil, Environmental and Disposal Regulations
- Handle ATF, transmission fluid and other oils with care.
- Dispose of drained fluid properly.
- Follow the legal, environmental, and disposal regulations.
- Follow the instructions listed on the fluid packaging.
General Information, Transmission
- If the transmission is separated from the motor, drain the transmission fluid and refill after assembly. Refer to TRANSMISSION FLUID, DRAINING AND FILLING .
- Refer to CAPACITIES for capacities. Refer to the Parts Information for specifications.
- When installing the transmission, make sure the alignment sleeves are seated correctly between the motor and the transmission.
- Allocate the bolts and other components. Refer to the Parts Information.
- Clean the contact surfaces when installing brackets as well as parts that have been waxed. Contact surfaces must be free of wax and grease.
Gaskets, O-Rings, Seals
- Always replace gaskets, O-rings and seals.
- After removing the seals, examine the contact surface on the housing or shaft for burrs resulting from removal or for other signs of damage.
- To prevent crushing when installing, lightly lubricate O-rings before inserting.
- After replacing the seals, O-rings and gaskets, check the transmission fluid level. Refer to TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL, CHECKING .
Sealant
- Thoroughly clean the housing separating surfaces before applying the sealing compound.
- Apply the sealant evenly and not too thick.
- Do not allow any sealing compound to get into the ventilation holes.
Circlips
- Installation position for some of the circlips: the circlip is >>narrower at the top<< and so is its installation position. This makes it easier for the pliers to grab the circlip when removing and installing it.
- Do not stretch the circlips.
- Always replace damaged or stretched circlips.
- The circlips must rest at the bottom of the groove.
Bolts and Nuts
- Loosen the bolts and nuts opposite the tightening sequence.
- Nuts and bolts which secure covers and housings should be loosened and tightened diagonally and in steps if no tightening sequence is specified.
- Parts which are particularly sensitive must not be tilted and must be loosened or tightened diagonally in stages.
- Replace the self-locking bolts and nuts.
- Threaded holes used for self-locking bolts or bolts coated with locking fluid must be cleaned, for example with a thread tap. Otherwise there is the risk that the bolts could break off when they are removed again.
- Make sure the contact surfaces and visible surfaces on the nuts and bolts are waxed after assembling.
- Please make sure that the thread pitch is correct so that the proper thread cutter is used during cleaning, and the thread does not get damaged.
Bearings
- Insert all the bearings in transmission with transmission fluid.
- Install needle bearings with the lettered side (thicker metal) facing the fitting tool.
Shims
- Measure the adjusting shims at several locations with a micrometer. Variations in strength make it possible to find the exact shim thickness required.
- Check for burrs or damage.
- Only install perfect shims.
