Torque Converter, Installing
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Sliding Gauge
-- Lubricate the converter hub and sealing lips on converter seal with a drop of ATF (no more!).
-- Slide the converter all the way into transmission.
-- Rotate the converter and press it lightly toward the transmission.
The converter slides noticeably farther into the transmission when the converter hub cutout slides into the pump wheel driver toward the inside.
When replacing the converter, the outer sealing lip of the sealing ring can fold >>inward<<.
-- Pull the converter 5 mm back out of the transmission.
This brings the lip into its >>correct position<<.
-- Then slide the converter all the way into the transmission.
The converter is installed correctly when the transmission can be positioned on the engine flange without >>using force<<.
-- If that is not the case, the converter must be reinstalled. Then check the installation dimensions. Refer to Fig 5.
Installation Dimension
- When the converter is installed correctly, distance -a- between the contact surfaces on the threaded holes on the converter and the torque converter housing is approx. 23 mm.
-- Ensure that the converter does not slip >>forward<< when the converter transmission is installed.
If the engine and transmission are connected with force when the converter is installed incorrectly, damage to the transmission and converter results.
The converter is installed correctly when the transmission can be positioned on the engine flange without >>using force<<.
Drive plate to converter tightening specification. Refer to TRANSMISSION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, HYBRID VEHICLES .
-- Check the ATF level after installing the transmission and add more ATF, if necessary. Refer to ATF LEVEL, CHECKING AND FILLING .
