Safety Precautions When Working On Fuel Supply System
There is a risk of injury due to the fuel being under pressure.
The fuel system is under pressure. Injuries are possible from fuel spraying out.
Before opening the fuel system:
-- Wear protective eyewear.
-- Wear safety gloves.
-- Reduce the pressure: place clean cloths around the connection point and carefully open the connection point.
Leaking fuel increases the risk of fire.
When the battery is connected, the door contact switch activates the fuel pump when opening the driver door. Leaking fuel may ignite and start a fire.
-- Before opening the fuel system, cut off the power supply to the fuel pump.
Pay attention to the Fuel Tank Fuel Level:
- The fuel tank may only be partially full. How much fuel can remain in the fuel tank can be read in the respective work description.
- Drain the fuel tank, if necessary. Refer to FUEL TANK, DRAINING .
- Before starting work, place the extracting hose on an exhaust extractor that is switched on near the fuel tank installation opening.
- This exhaust extracting system evacuates the fuel vapors.
- If no exhaust extracting system is available, a radial fan (as long as motor is not in air flow) with a delivery volume greater than 15 m3 /h can be used.
- Do not let fuel come in contact with skin. Wear fuel-resistant gloves.
To reduce the risk of personal injury and damage to the fuel injection and glow plug system, always observe the following:
- The ignition must be switched off before connecting or disconnecting fuel injection and glow plug system wiring or tester cables.
- Perform an engine wash only when the ignition is turned off.
- There will be entries stored in the engine control module DTC memory if the engine was started while the connectors were disconnected: Check DTC memory in Guided Functions using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
