Selector Mechanism, Removing And Installing: Removing

-- Determine whether a coded radio is installed. If so, obtain the anti-theft code.

Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

-- Remove the boot with the shifter knob and noise insulation. Refer to GEARSHIFT KNOB, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the center console and the center console mounting bracket. Refer to CENTER CONSOLE .

-- Remove the nuts -arrows-.

-- Remove the air filter housing if it is located over the gearshift mechanism. Refer to AIR FILTER (CNLA & CRJA) , or AIR FILTER (CZCA, CZDA & CZTA) , or AIR FILTER (CBPA & CKJA) , or AIR FILTER (CPLA, CPPA, CPKA & CPRA) .

-- Remove the lock washer -1- for the shift cable -2- from the gearshift lever -3-.

-- Remove the shift cable -2- from the pins.

-- Remove the relay lever -4- together with the selector cable mount. Refer to the illustration below.

-- Pull the securing mechanism all the way forward in direction of -arrow 1- and then unlock to the left in direction of -arrow 2-.

-- Push the relay lever forward (direction of -arrow 3-).

-- Remove the clip -arrow 1-, and remove the relay lever with the cable retainer -arrow 2- together with the cable retainer from the gearshift cover.

-- Remove the cable bracket from the transmission -arrows-, if necessary, unclip the hose/line assembly.

-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to NOISE INSULATION .

-- Remove the tunnel brace. Refer to UNDERBODY TRIM PANEL .

CAUTION:

There is a danger of causing damage to the decoupling element.

  • Do not bend the decoupling element more than 10°.
  • Do not load the decoupling element.
  • Do not damage the wire mesh on the decoupling element.

-- Disconnect the exhaust system front section at the double clamp and remove from the subframe. Refer to EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS (CPLA, CPPA, CPKA, CPRA) , or EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS (CBPA, CKJA) , or EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS (CVCA, CUUA, CUUB, DELA, DEBA, DEJA & DGMA) , or EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS (CNLA, CRJA) .

-- Disengage exhaust system rear section and secure to the body using for example using a wire. Remove the rear section of the exhaust system, if necessary.

-- Remove the underbody trim panel nuts -arrows-.

-- Remove the lock washers -2- and -3-.

-- Lower the underbody cover on the inner side just enough until the heat shield -1- for the center tunnel can be removed.

-- Pivot shift housing downward and remove with cables.

-- Insert a screwdriver -A- between the bushing -B- and the relay lever.
