Engine Control Module -J623-, Removing And Installing, Engine Control Module With Metal Retainer: Removing

-- If the Engine Control Module -J623- is to be replaced, the adaptation values must be read and saved before removing the Engine Control Module -J623-.

-- The procedure is described in the "Guided Functions" mode under the "Engine Control Module, Replacing" test sequence/function. Refer to Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.

-- Save the adaptation values as a file.

-- Switch off the ignition after saving the file with the adaptation values. Remove the key.

NOTE:

If the fuel injector adaptation values from the old (faulty) engine control module are no longer readable, they must be manually entered and adapted in the new engine control module.

CAUTION:

Contacting the engine control module with the battery positive terminal damages the engine control module. For this reason the battery must be disconnected before removing the engine control module from its holder. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

-- Open the clamp in direction of -arrow- and remove the Engine Control Module -J623-.

-- Use a mini-grinder -2- to make a slit in the head of the shear bolt -1- for a screwdriver.

NOTE:

The threads of the shear bolts were installed with a locking fluid. For this reason, the threads must be heated with the heat gun to remove the bolts.

-- Adjust the settings on the hot air gun as shown. That means the temperature potentiometer -2- set to maximum heat and the two-stage airflow switch -3- set to level 3.

WARNING:

Danger of getting burned by the hot air gun.

  • By heating the threads, the retaining tabs, shear bolts and parts of the metal housing become very hot. Make sure that only the thread is heated and not any of the surrounding parts. Cover these up if necessary.

-- Position the :VAS1978/14A  with the nozzle attachment -arrow- on the shear bolt threads.

-- Warm up the shear bolts for approximately 20 to 30 seconds.

-- Remove the shear bolt -1- with a screwdriver -2-.

-- Remove the metal lock from the connectors for the Engine Control Module -J623-.

-- Unlock and disconnect the connectors.
