Steering Column: Removing

The steering column is delivered only as a complete replacement part. Servicing is not possible.

The steering lock housing can be transferred, refer to [For transmission(s) 0A6, 09M] Description and Operation .

WARNING:

Before starting work on electrical equipment and removing steering wheel, the following conditions must be fulfilled:

  • The technician must electrostatic discharge. This is done by touching a grounded metal part, for example, water lines, heater pipe, metal carriers or a workshop hoist, refer to ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS .

If this not done, the Electronic Steering Column Lock Control Module -J764- could fail later.

If these notes are not observed, the airbag system may not function properly during vehicle operation!

-- Set the wheels to the straight ahead position.

-- Pull lever downward beneath steering column.

-- Swing steering column downward as far as possible and pull out.

-- Push lever under steering column upward again.

-- Remove airbag from steering wheel, refer to Removal and Installation .

-- Remove steering wheel, refer to STEERING WHEEL .

-- Remove steering column switch trim, refer to Removal and Installation .

-- Remove steering column switch, refer to [For transmission(s) 0A6, 09M] Removal and Installation .

-- Remove footwell vent outlets beneath steering column, refer to Removal and Installation .

Vehicles with Ignition Switch

-- Disconnect the harness connector -1-.

Vehicle with "Keyless Access" Keyless Locking and Starting System

-- Disconnect the harness connector -1-.

-- Unclip the wire from the retainer on the Electronic Steering Column Lock Control Module -J764- -arrow-.

Continuation for All Vehicles

-- Remove the cable channel -1- underneath the steering column. To do this, lift the tab -arrow- slightly and remove the cable channel from the guide on the steering column.

-- Remove the nuts -arrows- and remove foot well trim -1-.

-- Remove the bolt -1- and pull off universal joint -2- from steering gear.

CAUTION:

If the universal joint is separated from the steering gear, the following work cannot be performed:

  • Connect the battery.
  • Switch on the ignition.
  • Turning the steering gear
  • Turning the steering column

These points must be observed, because otherwise it can cause irreparable damage.

-- Remove Ground (GND) cable -arrow- and cable -1- from steering column.

-- Remove bolts -2-.

-- Remove the screw -1- and remove the clutch pedal crash brace -2-.

-- Remove the screw -3- and remove the brake pedal crash brace -4-.

-- Lower steering column slightly and carefully pull out upward.

CAUTION:

Always follow the instructions for handling and transporting the steering column STEERING COLUMN, HANDLING AND TRANSPORTING .
