Bevel Box: Installing

Install in the reverse order of removal. Note the following: 

-- Grease the splines on the differential with grease for clutch plate splines G 000 100.

-- Install a new circlip -arrow A- and a new O-ring -arrow B- on the right stub shaft.

-- Insert the bevel box and press it against the transmission as far as the stop.

NOTE:

If the tooth position is incorrect (the bevel box cannot be pressed against the transmission), rotate the stub shaft.

-- If the tooth position is correct and it is guided centered, the bevel box slides against the transmission as far as the stop.

CAUTION:

Hit the stub shaft circlip onto the toothed lug with a plastic hammer on the front side to make sure it latched correctly into the differential bevel gear. Do not pull the bevel box forcefully against the transmission by tightening the bolts. The transmission or bevel box could be damaged.

-- First, tighten the new bevel box upper/lower bolts -arrows- by hand and then to 40 Nm + an additional 90° (1/4) turn.

-- Install the transmission bracket -A-. Follow the installed location and tightening sequence for the bolts.

Component location, refer to Fig 3.

Tightening sequence, refer to Fig 4.

Sequence Bolts Tightening Specifications
1. -1 and 2- counter turn by hand
2. -2- 40 Nm
3. -1- 40 Nm
drive axle heat shield 20 Nm

-- Check the fluid level in the bevel box. Refer to BEVEL BOX GEAR OIL, CHECKING .

-- Install the right drive axle heat shield and bolts -arrows-.

-- Position the driveshaft on the bevel box by pressing the engine/transmission assembly forward as far as necessary.

NOTE:

The seal in the driveshaft flange -arrow- must not be damaged when removing and installing the transmission. Replace the driveshaft if it is damaged.

-- Move the engine and transmission forward and remove the wood block -A-.

-- Install the driveshaft flexible disc bolts -arrows- to the bevel box output flange. Refer to [For transmission(s) 02E, 09M] Special Tools or [For transmission(s) 02Q] Special Tools[For transmission(s) 02E] Special Tools .

-- Secure the pendulum support with new bolts. Tightening specifications, refer to [For transmission(s) 02E, 02Q, 09M] Specifications .

-- Install the right drive axle. Refer to [For transmission(s) 02E, 02Q, 09M] Removal and Installation .

-- Install the noise insulation. Refer to Description and Operation .
