Ignition System
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2010 Volkswagen Routan and 2009 Volkswagen Routan. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
All engines use a fixed ignition timing system. Basic ignition timing is not adjustable. All spark advance is determined by the powertrain control module.
The 3.8L engine uses a distributorless ignition system and is commonly referred to as direct ignition system.
The crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor are hall effect devices. The CMP sensor and CKP sensor generate square wave pulses that are inputs to the PCM. Refer to CAMSHAFT AND CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR OPERATION . The PCM determines engine position from these sensors. The PCM calculates injector sequence and ignition timing from crankshaft and camshaft position.
