ABS Control Module -J104- AND ABS Hydraulic Unit -N55-: Removing

Component location: The ABS Control Module -J104- is attached to the ABS Hydraulic Unit and is located inside the engine compartment on the right side.

  1. ABS Hydraulic Unit with ABS Control Module
  2. Brake Booster with Tandem Brake Master Cylinder

Risk of destroying the brake lines by bending.

Never forcefully bend the brake lines in the hydraulic unit area.

-- Get the coding from the ABS Control Module and write it down.

Use the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.

-- Take note of the radio code for vehicles with a coded radio. Ask if necessary.

-- Disconnect the battery. Refer to [For transmission(s) 0A4, 2E, 9G, 2Q] Removal and Installation .

-- Release and remove the intake hose -2-.

-- Remove the bolts -3- and the intake hose.

-- If equipped, remove the nut -1- and remove the heat shield -2-.

-- Disconnect and remove the connector from the ABS Control Module -J104- in direction of -arrow-.

-- Insert the Brake Pedal Actuator VAG1869/2.

-- Attach the bleeder bottle bleed hose -1- to the left front brake caliper bleed valve.

-- Open the bleed valve.

-- Attach the bleeder bottle bleed hose -1- to the left rear brake caliper bleed valve.

-- Open the bleed valve.

-- Depress the brake pedal at least 60 mm with the Brake Pedal Actuator VAG1869/2.

-- Close left front and left rear bleeder valves.

Do not remove Brake Pedal Actuator VAG1869/2.

-- Place a lint-free cloth under the ABS Control Module and the ABS Hydraulic Unit.

NOTE:

Make sure no brake fluid gets on the contact surfaces.

-- First, mark both brake lines from master cylinder -A- and -B-.

-- Remove the break line from the ABS Hydraulic Unit -N55-.

-- Seal brake lines and threaded holes with 1H0 698 311 A.

-- Mark brake lines -1- through -4- and then remove them.

-- Seal brake lines and threaded holes with 1H0 698 311 A.

-- Remove the hex bolt form the bracket -arrow-.

-- Remove the ABS Hydraulic Unit with the ABS Control Module and the bracket sideways in -direction of arrow- from the rubber bushings on the console.

-- Turn the ABS Hydraulic Unit with the ABS Control Module upside down.

-- Remove the bracket from the ABS Hydraulic Unit inside the engine compartment.

-- Remove ABS Hydraulic Unit with ABS Control Module.

Component location: The ABS Control Module -J104- is attached to the ABS Hydraulic Unit and is located inside the engine compartment on the right side.

  1. ABS Hydraulic Unit with ABS Control Module
  2. Brake booster with tandem master cylinder

Risk of destroying the brake lines by bending.

-- Disconnect the connector -2- from the fuel line.

NOTE:

Disconnect the connectors. Refer to Removal and Installation .

-- Disconnect the connector -2- from the EVAP canister purge regulator valve 1 -N80- -1-.

-- Remove the EVAP canister purge regulator valve 1 -1-.

-- Move the EVAP canister purge regulator valve 1 -1- to the side with the wire still connected.

-- Unclip the wiring harness -3- from the coolant pipe -arrows- and move it to the side.

-- Loosen the clamp -2- on the coolant reservoir hose -3-.

-- Seal off the coolant hose with Hose Clamps - Up To 25 mm 3094.

-- Disconnect the hose from the coolant expansion tank -3-.

-- Remove the coolant pipe -1 - from the cylinder head -arrows- and move it to the side.

-- Remove the nuts -1- and remove the heat shield -2-, if equipped.

-- Disconnect the connector from the ABS Control Module -in direction of arrow-.

-- Insert Brake Pedal Actuator VAG1869/2.

-- Attach the bleeder bottle bleed hose -1- to the left front brake caliper bleed valve.

-- Open the bleed valve.

-- Attach the bleeder bottle bleed hose -1- to the left rear brake caliper bleed valve.

-- Open the bleed valve.

-- Depress the brake pedal at least 60 mm with the Brake Pedal Actuator VAG1869/2.

-- Close left front and left rear bleeder valves.

Do not remove Brake Pedal Actuator VAG1869/2.

-- Place a lint-free cloth under the ABS Control Module -J104- and the ABS Hydraulic Unit -N55-.

-- Remove the break line from the ABS Hydraulic Unit -N55-.

-- Seal brake lines and threaded holes with sealing plugs 1H0 698 311 A.

-- Mark brake lines -1- through -4- and then remove them.

-- Seal brake lines and threaded holes with sealing plugs 1H0 698 311 A.

-- Remove the hex bolt form the bracket -arrow-.

-- Remove the ABS Hydraulic Unit with the ABS Control Module and the bracket sideways in -direction of arrow- from the rubber bushings on the console.

-- Turn the ABS Hydraulic Unit with the ABS Control Module upside down.

-- Remove the bracket from the ABS Hydraulic Unit inside the engine compartment.

-- Remove ABS Hydraulic Unit with ABS Control Module.

  1. ABS Hydraulic Unit with ABS Control Module
  2. Brake booster with tandem master cylinder

-- Retrieve the coding from the ABS Control Module -J104- and write it down.

Use the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.

-- Take note of the radio code for vehicles with a coded radio. Ask if necessary.

-- Disconnect the battery. Refer to [For transmission(s) 0A4, 2E, 9G, 2Q] Removal and Installation .

-- Remove the engine cover. Refer to [For transmission(s) 0A4, 2E, 2Q] Removal and Installation .

-- Remove the right underbody trim. Refer to Description and Operation .

-- Remove the NOx sensor 2 control module -J881-. Refer to [For transmission(s) 0A4, 2E, 2Q] Description and Operation .

-- Remove the particulate filter. Refer to [For transmission(s) 0A4, 2E, 2Q] Description and Operation .

-- Remove the right driveshaft form the flange, lay it down and secure it. Refer to Removal and Installation .

-- Remove the nuts -1-.

-- Remove the nuts -2- and remove the particulate filter bracket -3-.

-- Move the particulate filter downward and lay it on the subframe.

-- Seal off all openings with Engine Bung Set VAS6122.

NOTE:

Do not remove the particulate filter from the vehicle.

-- Lower the particulate filter just enough so that it touches the steering gear.

NOTE:

Pay attention to the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor -- and the Heated Oxygen Sensor -- when lowering onto the cables in order to avoid any damage.

-- If equipped, remove the nut -1- and remove the heat shield -2-.

-- Disconnect the connector from the ABS Control Module -in direction of arrow-.

-- Insert VAG1869/2.

-- Attach the bleeder bottle bleed hose -1- to the left front brake caliper bleed valve.

-- Open the bleed valve.

-- Attach the bleeder bottle bleed hose -1- to the left rear brake caliper bleed valve.

-- Open the bleeder valve.

-- Push the brake pedal at least 60 mm using the Brake Pedal Actuator VAG1869/2.

-- Close the left front and left rear bleeder valves.

Do not remove the Brake Pedal Actuator VAG1869/2.

-- Place a lint-free cloth under the ABS Control Module -J104- and the ABS Hydraulic Unit -N55-.

NOTE:

Make sure no brake fluid gets on the contact surfaces.

-- First label both brake lines from the brake master cylinder -A- and -B-.

-- Remove the break line from the ABS Hydraulic Unit -N55-.

-- Seal brake lines and threaded holes with sealing plugs1H0 698 311 A.

-- Mark brake lines -1- through -4- and then remove them.

-- Seal brake lines and threaded holes with sealing plugs1H0 698 311 A.

-- Remove the hex bolt form the bracket -arrow-.

-- Remove the ABS Hydraulic Unit with the ABS Control Module and the bracket sideways in -direction of arrow- from the rubber bushings on the console.

-- Turn the ABS Hydraulic Unit with the ABS Control Module upside down.

-- Remove the bracket from the ABS Hydraulic Unit inside the engine compartment.

-- Remove ABS Hydraulic Unit with ABS Control Module.
