Transmission, Installing

3.8L Engines 

Fig 1: Identifying Torque Converter Bolts

-- Raise and install the transmission.

-- Install the two lower transmission bolts. Tighten the bolts to 95 Nm (70 ft lbs).

-- Align the reference marks made on the torque converter and flexplate during removal.

-- Install the torque converter bolts (1) and tighten the bolts to 88 Nm (65 ft lbs).

-- Install the structural cover (3).

-- Install the structural cover to transmission bolts (2).

-- Install the structural cover to oil pan bolts (1).

-- For the tightening specifications for the structural cover. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS  .

4.0L Engines

-- Raise, position and install the transmission.

NOTE: The two transmission bolts next to the inspection cover will have a exhaust bracket under them.

-- Install the two outer lower transmission bolts (2) and tighten the bolts to 95 Nm (70 ft lbs).

-- Align the reference marks made on the torque converter and flexplate during removal.

-- Install the torque converter bolts (1) and tighten the bolts to 88 Nm (65 ft lbs).

-- Install the torque converter dust shield (2) and bolt (3), tighten the bolt to 10 Nm (89 in lbs).

-- Install the stand off bracket (4) and bolts (2), tighten the bolts to 70 Nm (52 ft lbs).

-- Install the remaining lower transmission bolts and tighten the bolts to 70 Nm (52 ft lbs).

-- Install the cross-under pipe. Refer to EXHAUST CROSSUNDER PIPE for CJRA engines, EXHAUST CROSSUNDER PIPE for CGVA engines or EXHAUST CROSSOVER PIPE for CGUA engines. .

-- Install the exhaust bracket bolts (3).

-- Install the left side transmission mount bracket and bolts, tighten the bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft lbs).

-- Raise the transmission.

-- Install the left transmission mount bolts (1) and tighten the bolts to 100 Nm (74 ft lbs).

-- Install the rear transmission mount bracket bolts (1), tighten the bolts to 100 Nm (74 ft lbs).

-- Install the starter motor along with the front mount bracket (2).

-- Install the front mount bracket bolts (1) and tighten the bolts to 100 Nm (74 ft lbs).

-- Install the transmission crossmember (4).

-- Install the transmission crossmember bolts (1) and tighten to 50 Nm (37 ft lbs).

-- Install the front mount through bolt (1) and tighten to 50 Nm (37 ft lbs).

-- Install the front wheelhouse liners. Refer to Removal and Installation .

-- Install the ground cable (3) and bolt (2). Tighten the bolt to 10 Nm (89 in lbs).

-- Install the clip (1) to the valve body oil pan.

-- Install the drive axles. Refer to Removal and Installation .

-- Lower the vehicle.

-- Connect the output speed sensor electrical connector (2).

-- Connect the transfer shaft speed sensor electrical connector (1).

-- Install the heater line bolts (2).

-- Connect the input speed sensor electrical connector (3).

-- Connect the solenoid pack electronic connector (2) at the valve body oil pan (1).

-- Install the upper transmission bolts and tighten to 95 Nm (70 ft lbs).

-- Install the crankshaft position sensor (3).

-- Install the crankshaft position sensor bolt (1) and tighten to 12 Nm (106 in lbs).

-- Connect crankshaft position sensor electrical connector (2).

-- Connect the oil cooler lines to the transmission. An audible 'click' should be heard. Verify connection by pulling outward.

-- Install the shift cable to the bracket.

-- Connect the shift cable (1) to the transmission manual valve lever (2). Verify adjustment.

-- Install the vacuum pump, if equipped. Refer to Removal and Installation .

-- Install the battery tray

-- Install the clips holding the harness and ground cable to the battery tray.

-- Install the battery (2) and battery hold down bolt (3).

-- Connect the positive and negative battery cables (1).

-- Fill the transmission with fluid and road test.
