Tip: The following screen shot illustrates an iPhone 4G using a non iPod tagging MDI cable. This is a generic Apple disclaimer as the standard iPod MDI cable does not contain Apples Authentication microchip. The new iPod tagging MDI iPod cable has this functionality. For more information see instance 2026784Multimedia Interface (MDI), iPod® Tagging Overview .

SERVICE
MDI Software
For sporadic concerns and other functionality problems see instance 2024337Factory Installed Media-In (MDI), Updated Programming for Various iPod® Concerns. This updates the MDI to software 0240.
MDI Cable Diagnosis
The following concerns can be checked by manipulating the cable or by substituting a known good cable:
- Sporadic or complete loss of left and/or right audio channel
- iPod battery charging is intermittent
- Device not recognized
Tip: The new iPod tagging cable only recognizes iPod Nano gen 5+ and newer iPod/iPhones. For more information see instance 2026784Multimedia Interface (MDI), iPod® Tagging Overview.
If functionality returns after cable manipulation, then replace cable.
Tip: Older iPods may not connect securely due to connector design changes. To verify MDI cable integrity test the connection with a newer compatible iPod or iPhone® device.
