November 28, 2014: UPDATED to clarify step.

Use the following procedure to diagnose active wheel speed sensor complaints:

  1. Disconnect the suspect wheel speed sensor harness end connector.
  2. Switch ON the ignition.
  3. To determine which wheel speed sensor pin has voltage, check each individual pin at the vehicle wiring harness side, of the wheel speed sensor circuits.
NOTE: If voltage is not present from the ABS module, the circuit is open.
  4. Use a jumper wire to connect this terminal to the corresponding terminal of the speed sensor.
  5. Connect multimeter (milliamps setting) in series with the Ground side of the sensor.
  6. Slowly rotate the wheel.
  7. Amperage readings should ALTERNATE from ~7mA to ~14mA as wheel rotates.
  8. If the amperage readings DO NOT change, the sensor or the bearing inside of the hub is faulty.
  9. The digital storage oscilloscope (DSO) function of the VAS 5051b tool can also be used; a properly operating sensor will produce a square wave pattern.
