November 28, 2014: UPDATED to clarify step.
Use the following procedure to diagnose active wheel speed sensor complaints:
- Disconnect the suspect wheel speed sensor harness end connector.
- Switch ON the ignition.
- To determine which wheel speed sensor pin has voltage, check each individual pin at the vehicle wiring harness side, of the wheel speed sensor circuits.NOTE: If voltage is not present from the ABS module, the circuit is open.
- Use a jumper wire to connect this terminal to the corresponding terminal of the speed sensor.
- Connect multimeter (milliamps setting) in series with the Ground side of the sensor.
- Slowly rotate the wheel.
- Amperage readings should ALTERNATE from ~7mA to ~14mA as wheel rotates.
- If the amperage readings DO NOT change, the sensor or the bearing inside of the hub is faulty.
- The digital storage oscilloscope (DSO) function of the VAS 5051b tool can also be used; a properly operating sensor will produce a square wave pattern.
