Engine, Supporting In Installed Position: Procedure

WARNING: When doing any repair work, especially in the engine compartment, pay attention to the following due to clearance issues:
  • Route all wires and lines so that the original path is followed.
  • Ensure sufficient clearance to all moving or hot components.
CAUTION: Danger of causing damage to the decoupling element:
  • Do not bend the decoupling element more than 10°.
  • Do not stretch the decoupling element.
  • Do not damage the wire mesh on the decoupling element.
NOTE: The subframe bolts may only be loosened when the engine is supported in the installed position with the Engine Support Bridge 10-222A.

-- Remove the engine cover, refer to ENGINE COVER .

-- Remove the plenum chamber cover, refer to BULKHEAD OVERVIEW .

When Working on the Transmission Side 

-- Remove the air filter housing, refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING .

NOTE: To perform work sequence, the ground cable must be disconnected from battery. Check if a coded radio is installed. If so, obtain anti-theft coding beforehand.

-- Remove the battery and the battery tray, refer to BATTERY and BATTERY TRAY .

When Working on the Belt Pulley Side 

-- Remove the bolts -3- and the coolant expansion tank -2-.

-- Disconnect and remove the connector for the coolant reservoir -2-.

-- Lay the coolant reservoir -2- on the engine.

WARNING: Very hot fuel can burn your skin.
  • The temperature of the fuel lines and may reach 100°C (212°F) after stopping the engine. Let the fuel cool down before opening any line connections otherwise there is a danger of scalding.
  • Wear safety gloves
  • Wear protective eyewear.

-- Open the couplings -A and B- and remove the fuel lines. Open the couplings, refer to FUEL SUPPLY .

-- Free up the fuel lines.

-- Remove the fuel filter and lay with wires connected on the engine, refer to FUEL SUPPLY .

-- If equipped remove the vacuum hose -arrow-.

-- Remove the hose -1- for the crankcase ventilation on the air guide hose.

-- To do this press the release button.

CAUTION: Depending on the vehicle equipment level and market-specific crankcase ventilation hose may be used, which cannot be removed from the cylinder head cover without being destroyed. For these version the crankcase ventilation hose can only be separated at the air guide hose connection.

-- Release the connector from the air guide hose and remove.

-- Unclip the wires on the intake tube.

-- Free up the vacuum hoses -arrows- on the air guide pipe.

-- Remove bolt -2- and tilt the air guide hose with the intake tube backward and remove from the turbocharger.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- from the left and right sides of the lock carrier bracket.

-- Remove the lower mounts on the Engine Support Bridge - Engine Support 28 10-222A/28 and replace with the Engine Support 28-1 10-222A/28-1.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- for securing the engine support bridge on the lock carrier from the Engine Support 28-1 10-222A/28-1.

NOTE: Use the bolts from the engine support 10-222A/28-2 for attaching the Engine Support Bridge - Engine Support 282810-222A/28. Do not use the bolts for the bracket.

-- Install the Engine Support Bridge - Engine Support 2810-222A/28 and tighten the bolts -arrows-.

CAUTION: A second technician is needed to mount the Engine Support Bridge 10-222A on the vehicle to prevent the Engine Support Bridge from tipping.

Assemble engine support bracket as shown.

Engine Support Bridge - Engine Support Socket 10-222A/31A-1 on the suspension strut tower.
