Ceramic Glow Plugs
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Hinged Socket 3220
- Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) V.A.G 1331
- Handheld Multi-Meter V.A.G 1526 A
- Connector Test Set V.A.G 1594 C
Conditions:
- The engine is cold
- The ignition is turned off
Removing
When removing and installing, do not tilt ceramic glow plugs. Remove components that are in the way.
-- Disconnect the connector from the ceramic glow plugs.
-- Remove assemblies that are in the way, such as the upper and lower intake manifolds, before removal.
-- Remove the ceramic glow plugs using the hinged Socket 3220.
Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse of removal, noting the following:
-- Cylinder head bore and threads must be completely cleaned of deposits before installing.
Never oil or grease the threads of the bore in the cylinder head and on the ceramic glow plugs.
-- Install the ceramic glow plugs into the cylinder head by hand using hinged Socket 3220.
-- Tighten the ceramic glow plugs. Tightening specification: 12 Nm
Checking
After installing and before the first engine start on a cold engine, always perform a resistance test at all the ceramic glow plugs.
- Target value: maximum 1 Ω
-- If the specified value is exceeded, replace the malfunctioning ceramic glow plug.
If the malfunctioning ceramic glow plug is broken, remove all broken pieces from the engine, otherwise they can cause damage to the engine.
