Driver And Passenger Airbag, Special Notes

WARNING:

Store driver and passenger airbag units in their uninstalled condition so that the cushioned side faces upward.

WARNING:

On the following vehicles, which are registered in the USA, may have a 2-stage airbag unit. After the 1st stage is deployed, the 2nd stage remains functional:

  • Volkswagen Phaeton: Driver and Front Passenger Airbag
  • Volkswagen Touareg: Front Passenger Airbag
  • Volkswagen New Beetle Cabriolet: Front Passenger Airbag
  • Volkswagen New Beetle: Front Passenger Airbag

On all other vehicles, the 2nd stage is always deployed!

Characteristics of a 2-stage airbag unit:

  • 1. The "PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF" indicator lamp is in the interior rearview mirror base.
  • 2. Warning label affixed to the inside of the sun visor.

On the above-mentioned vehicles having a 2-stage airbag unit be sure to note the following information.

Caution! If the stage 1 airbag unit has deployed, this does not necessarily mean that the 2nd stage has deployed. If the 1st stage has deployed on an airbag unit, when the 2nd stage deploys, it can cause serious personal injury. Currently there is no definitive method for verifying if the 2nd stage has been deployed. For this reason, such airbag units must be returned to original packaging for proper recycling/disposal in accordance with national legislation.
