Engine, Installing

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 Volkswagen Touareg, 2006 Volkswagen Touareg, 2005 Volkswagen Touareg, and 2004 Volkswagen Touareg. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:

When installing the engine/transmission assembly to the vehicle, it is always necessary to bring the engine carrier into contact with the body using the scissor lift table VAS 6131. Pulling up the engine carrier with the bolts damages the thread inserts!

Installing

Installation is performed in reverse order. When doing this note the following:

If the engine was separated from the transmission:

-- Make sure the alignment pins for centering the engine/transmission are installed in the cylinder block, if not install them as necessary. Refer to [For transmission(s) 09D] Specifications .

If the subframe with axle assemblies has been removed from the scissor lift table:

-- Position the axle assemblies with subframe again on the prepared scissor lift table.

-- Set the engine on the engine carrier.

If the transmission is not yet bolted on:

-- Support the engine from below using the support f/ VAS 6131 for V6/V10/V8 VAS 6131/8.

-- Before installing the assembly, install the exhaust manifolds with catalytic converters onto the engine.

CAUTION:

When doing any repair work, especially in the engine compartment, pay attention to the following due to clearance issues:

  • Route lines of all types (for example, fuel, hydraulic, Evaporative Emission (EVAP), coolant and refrigerant, brake fluid, vacuum) and electrical wiring so that the original path is followed.
  • To prevent damage to the lines, make sure there is sufficient clearance to all moving or hot components.

-- When installing the engine, raise it with the scissor lift table far enough so the selector lever cable can be clipped in.

-- Reconnect all lines, hoses and electrical connections that were disconnected for the removal procedure.

-- Top off the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) level. Refer to [For transmission(s) 09D] Diagnosis and Testing .

-- Connect the Air Conditioning (A/C) lines to the compressor. Refer to Description and Operation .

-- Charge the A/C system. Refer to Description and Operation .

-- Fill the power steering system. Refer to General Information .

-- Fill the cooling system. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING .

-- Fill the engine with oil.

-- Connect the battery.

NOTE:

After installing the engine/transmission, perform a vehicle alignment. Refer to General Information .

-- Connect the vehicle diagnosis & service system VAS 5052.

-- Perform a vehicle system test. Refer to "Guided Fault Finding" in the vehicle diagnostic tester.

-- End the vehicle system test, this will automatically erase any Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) entries which occurred during the assembly.

-- Generate a readiness code in conjunction with a road test.

Observe the safety precautions that apply to road tests.

-- Perform a test drive.

-- Then perform the vehicle system test again and repair any occurring malfunctions if necessary.
