The term "common rail" refers to a shared fuel rail (high pressure) for all fuel injectors in a cylinder bank. The pressure generation and fuel injection processes are separated from each other in this system: A separate high pressure fuel pump generates the high pressure necessary for injection. It is stored in the fuel rail (high pressure) and provided to the fuel injectors through short injection lines.
