Selector Lever Cable

NOTE:

Check the cable for ease of movement after installing it.

Removing 

-- Move the selector lever into the "S" position.

-- Remove the air filter housing, refer to one of the following:

Passat, refer to "One Piece Intake Manifold" or "Two Piece Intake Manifold" in Description and Operation .

Passat CC and CC, refer to Description and Operation .

Tiguan, refer to Removal and Installation .

-- Remove the selector lever cable upward out of the cable bracket. Do not bend or kink the cable while doing this.

-- Release the cable -1- and then remove it from the cable bracket -2- to remove the selector lever cable from the transmission.

CAUTION:

Squeeze the retainers for the selector lever cable -arrows- together carefully so as not to break off the tabs. If one of the tabs breaks, the selector lever cable must be replaced.

-- Pry the cable -1- off the lever -3- using a wrench -2-.

-- Lift the vehicle.

The heat shield and exhaust system components may need to be removed in order to remove the cables and/or selector mechanism. Refer to Description and Operation .

with All Wheel Drive (AWD) 

-- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Continuation for All 

-- Remove the heat shield.

-- Remove the selector housing nuts and housing from under the selector lever.

-- Remove the selector housing downward from the selector mechanism.

-- Remove the lock washer -arrow-. Always replace the lock washer.

Remove the selector housing, push it forward on the cable.

The locking tab -1- must be pushed forward in order to remove the cable.

-- Push the pin -2- upward at the same time using a screwdriver.

-- Insert the screwdriver from underneath while pushing the locking tab forward.

-- Remove the selector lever cable.

Remove the selector housing from the cable

Installing 

Do not grease the cable.

-- Route the selector lever cable so that it is free of tension and install it into the cable bracket on the transmission but do not secure it yet.

-- When installing, make sure the selector lever cable is routed correctly.

-- Clip the selector lever cable into the bracket. Make sure that the bracket does not touch the transmission fluid cooler.

Tighten the nuts to 8 Nm

-- Mount the selector housing onto the cable.

-- Install the selector lever cable into the selector mechanism.

-- Insert the cable into the bracket and then insert the pin through the eye from the top

Install the lock washer only after having checked the cable for ease of movement. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, CHECKING .

-- Secure the cable with a new lock washer to the cable bracket on the selector mechanism.

-- Install the selector housing, the heat shield and the exhaust system.

with AWD 

-- Install the driveshaft. Refer to Removal and Installation .

All vehicles 

-- Check the selector lever cable after installing. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, CHECKING .
