TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

The compass does not appear in the instrument cluster.

PRODUCTION SOLUTION

Improved software has been introduced into production to correct compass display beginning:

Passat, Passat Wagon

CC, Passat CC

SERVICE

CHECK INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FOR COMPASS DISPLAY

  • Turn key to "ON" position
  • Use "Menu" button on steering wheel -arrow- to select Compass feature in MFI -rectangle-
  • If compass display is visible, WORK COMPLETE
  • If compass display is not visible, continue with software update.

SOFTWARE UPDATE

NOTE: Midtronics Battery Tester/Charger InCharge 940 to maintain vehicle battery voltage
NOTE: Battery MUST have a minimum no load charge between 12.5V and 14.5V (failure to maintain voltage during update process can lead to control module failure and will not be covered  under this Technical Bulletin).
  • VAS 5051B must be connected to vehicle and 110V AC power supply at all times during update programming.
  • VAS 5052/A must be connected to vehicle and battery voltage requirements maintained.
  • Any appliances with high electro-magnetic interference sources (e.g. mobile phones, Bluetooth) switched OFF.
  • Install Battery Tester/Charger InCharge 940 onto vehicle.
  • Select "Vehicle Self-Diagnosis"  -arrow-.

  • Select "On Board Diagnostic (OBD)"  -arrow-, then select → arrow.

  • Select "01 - Engine electronics"  -arrow-.

  • Select "006 - Basic setting"  -arrow-.

  • Enter Display group 4.
  • Check voltage. Battery MUST have a minimum no load charge between 12.5V and 14.5V.
  • Once proper voltage has been established, select up arrow to end Vehicle Self-Diagnosis.
    NOTE: Issues with vehicle limiting the ability to establish proper voltage are not covered under this Technical Bulletin.

  • Ensure that scan tool is connected to the on-line network.
  • Select "Guided Fault Finding"  -arrow-.

  • Select "Volkswagen"  -arrow-.

    Tip  : Scan tool must be at a minimum of CD Brand version V16.01.

  • Select "35 - Passat CC 2009"  -arrow-, regardless of model 
    NOTE: Always select Passat CC 2009.

    Selecting other vehicles will lead to incorrect test plan and failure to interrogate the instrument cluster.

  • Select "2009"  -arrow-.

  • Select "Sedan"  -arrow-, regardless of body style.

  • Select correct engine for the vehicle.

    Tip:  BPY engine is not affected by this Technical Bulletin.

  • Select → forward arrow to confirm vehicle identification and begin interrogation of control modules.

    If two selections for instrument cluster appear -rectangle- and -Note- box, as pictured, you have entered the vehicle incorrectly.  You have selected the wrong model, you must select "Passat CC 2009". 

    Exit Guided Fault Finding and reselect vehicle according to previous instruction.

  • If vehicle was selected correctly, only one Instrument cluster will be displayed -arrow-.
  • Once interrogation of control modules is complete, select "Done"  then → arrow.
    NOTE: Make repairs for DTCs found by Guided Fault Finding prior to proceeding with software update. DTC repairs necessary to begin software update are not covered by this Technical Bulletin.

  • Select "Go  to" button, then, select "Function/Component Selection"  -arrow-.

  • Select "2"  button -arrow- for updating the software through measures code.

  • Ensure tester is connected to the on-line network, then select "Done"  .

  • Observe software update screen.

    Tip  : A progress bar will not display during this software update. Software update takes approximately three minutes.

    Tip  : During the software update, instrument cluster may be blank or not show a display.

    NOTE: A progress bar will be displayed as pictured. Ignition must remain in the "off" position until progress bar has completed. Failure to wait the complete amount of time may damage the instrument cluster. Damage to the instrument cluster is not covered under this Technical Bulletin.
