Steering Gear Differences, Generation 1 And 2, Rabbit

As of start of production Golf from MY 2004, steering gear (Generation 1) is installed. This was replaced in MY 2004 with steering gear (Generation 2).

Vehicles which have a Generation 1 steering gear can be changed over to a Generation 2 steering gear. Refer to STEERING GEAR, CHANGING FROM GENERATION 1 TO GENERATION 2 .

You can identify the steering gear when it is installed by the number of bolts on the steering pinion bracket cover.

-- Raise vehicle.

-- Turn steering wheel to stop on both sides in succession while noting the number of bolts -1-.
