Selector Shaft Seal
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Sleeve VW 423
- Extractor Lever T20143/1
- Sealing grease G 052 128 A1
Removing
-- Remove the air filter housing if it is located above the gear shift unit. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING .
With a Metal Relay Lever:
-- Remove the lock washer -2- and remove the relay lever -3-.
If the relay lever cannot be removed due to the transmission mount bracket, remove the selector cable from the relay lever. Remove the slide shoe from the transmission shift lever.
With a Plastic Relay Lever:
-- Remove the relay lever with the cable retainer. Refer to PLASTIC RELAY LEVER .
Continuation for all Vehicles:
-- Remove the nut -4- and remove transmission shift lever -1-.
Installing
-- Pry out the seal using the extractor lever T20143/1.
-- Lightly lubricate the new seal on the outer circumference.
-- Fill the area between the sealing lip and dust lip -arrow- halfway with sealing grease for seal G 052 128 A1.
-- Drive in the seal until seated using the sleeve VW 423.
Install in reverse order of removal.
-- Install the transmission shift lever to the transmission selector shaft. Refer to Figure and then tighten the nut to specification, see item 17.
-- Install the air filter housing, if it was removed earlier. Refer to one of the following:
Gas engines, refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING .
