Transmission, Installing
Install in the reverse order of removal. Note the following:
In the case of a dirty transmission fluid or before installing a replacement transmission, clean the transmission fluid cooler and the transmission fluid lines. Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID COOLER AND LINE, CLEANING
Use a wire brush to clean the bolt threads that were installed using liquid locking fluid. Next, use liquid locking fluid AMV 185 101 A1- to install the bolts.
Use a thread tap to clean all the threaded holes containing selflocking bolts to remove any locking fluid residue. Otherwise the bolts could shear the next time they are removed.
- Always replace self-locking nuts and bolts.
- Reconnect all electrical connections, lines, hoses, and harness connectors that were disconnected during the removal.
- Prior to installation of the transmission, ensure that the torque converter is properly installed in the transmission.
Check the installed dimension -a-.
Prior to installation of the transmission to the engine, ensure that there are alignment sleeves for centering the engine/transmission or install them.
- If a replacement transmission is installed, it must be positioned on the universal support V.A.G 1359/2- as during removal. Secure the transmission using the tensioning straps T10038-.
- Align the transmission with respect to the engine and install it.
- Tighten the engine to transmission bolts -3 through 10- to specification.
- Install the 6 torque converter bolts -arrow- to the drive plate (rotate the crankshaft 1/3 rotation in engine rotation direction). Tightening specification, refer to TRANSMISSION TO ENGINE BOLTS, 3.0L TDI DIESEL ENGINE
- Install the starter. Refer to Removal and Installation
- Connect the connectors -1 through 3-.
- Connect the connector -1- to the multifunction transmission range switch -2-.
- Remove the plug and insert the transmission fluid lines into the transmission.
- Tighten the bolt -arrow- to specification, see -item 1- in the AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID LINES OVERVIEW
- Install the transmission fluid line bracket bolt to the transmission. Tightening specification, see -item 2- in the AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID LINES OVERVIEW
- Carefully install the selector lever cable ball head -2- to the selector shaft lever. Do not bend the selector shaft lever when doing this. Otherwise shifting can no longer be adjusted precisely.
- Install a new clip -1-.
- Check the selector lever cable setting, and adjust if necessary. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, CHECKING AND ADJUSTING
- Install the heat shield to the transmission. Tightening specification: 10 Nm.
- Install the speed sensor -3-. Tightening specification: 10 Nm.
- Install the coolant lines -2- to the transmission housing. Refer to
Attach the catalytic converter and the particulate filter -1- to the turbocharger. Refer to
Always replace the nuts to the turbocharger.
- Install the transfer case with the transmission carrier. Refer to Removal and Installation
- Further installation is in the reverse order of removal.
Check the transmission fluid level and fill as necessary. Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL, CHECKING AND FILLING
Installation is basically the reverse order of removal.
-- Before installing the transmission, make sure that torque converter is correctly inserted in the transmission. Refer to TORQUE CONVERTER, INSTALLING .
-- Check the installed dimension -a-. Refer to TORQUE CONVERTER, INSTALLING => Torque Converter Installed Dimension .
If the engine and transmission are connected forcefully when the converter is installed incorrectly, damage to the transmission and converter results.
-- Therefore, when tightening the transmission to the engine, always ensure that the converter is rotating freely and is not jammed.
-- Check the adjustment of the selector lever cable and adjust if necessary. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, CHECKING AND ADJUSTING .
After installation, check the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) level, top off if necessary. Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL, CHECKING AND FILLING .
Check the vehicle alignment. Refer to General Information .
