Engine Code

Engines are identified by a 3-letter code stamped on the engine. For engine code locations, see Fig 1 -Fig 4 . Engine codes are also located on the vehicle data plate.

NOTE: Engine number for 1.8L turbo can be found on mating flange between engine and transmission. Engine code is also imprinted on front engine lift eyelet (visible after removing cover above fuel injectors).

NOTE: Engine code for 1.9L TDI is located between diesel injection pump and exhaust manifold, on engine block.

NOTE: Engine code for 2.0L engine code AEG is located on machined pad on front of cylinder block above crankcase breather.

NOTE: Engine code and serial number for 2.0L engine codes AVH/AZG are located can be found on flange between engine/transmission. Additionally there is a sticker on the timing belt guard containing engine code and serial number. Engine code is also included on vehicle data plate.
