Work sequence
- Connect V.A.G 1551/1552 (Connecting scan tool and selecting engine electronics control module; see VAG 1551 SCAN TOOL, CONNECTING .)
- Run engine at idle speed and press buttons -0- and -1- to select "Engine electronics" address word 01.
Indicated on display
- Press buttons -0- and -4- to select "Basic setting" and confirm entry with -Q- button.
Indicated on display
- Press button -0- three times to select "Display group number 0" and confirm entry with -Q- button.
Indicated on display: (1 - 10 - Display fields)
- Check coolant temperature in display field 7.
- Specification: less than 73 (equates to 85 °C)
Continue with check only when coolant temperature is attained.
The start of injection in display field 2 is dependent on the fuel temperature in display field 9.
- Display field 2 start of injection. See Fig 4.
- Display field 9 fuel temperature
- Specified range for start of injection
Example:
The numerical value 90 in display field 9 (B) corresponds to a numerical value range of 34 to 73 in display field 2 (A).
If the start of injection (timing) is outside the specification tolerances:
- Remove connecting pipe between charge air cooler and intake manifold.
- Remove upper toothed belt guard.
- Loosen two injection pump sprocket bolts -1-.
- Position 22 mm wrench onto hub nut -2- to counter-hold pump shaft.
- Loosen 3rd injection pump sprocket bolt and turn pump shaft slightly:
To left = retards start of injection
To right = advances start of injection
NOTE: DO NOT loosen the hub nut -2-. If nut -2- is loosened the injection pump basic setting will be altered and this cannot be reset with normal workshop equipment. - Tighten new injection pump sprocket bolts to 20 Nm (15 ft lb).
If the injection pump has not been removed and installed beforehand:
- Install new injection pump sprocket bolts in sequence.
- Observe figures in field 2 and if necessary adjust again until mean value for specification zone -C- is displayed.
- Tighten injection pump sprockets securing bolts a further 1/4 turn (90°).
- Press the --> button.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End output" function 06 and confirm entry with -Q- button.
- Switch ignition off.
- Check DTC memory and, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase; see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) MEMORY, CHECKING AND ERASING .
- Read readiness code, see READINESS CODE, DISPLAYING .
If the DTC memory has been erased or the engine control module was disconnected from permanent battery positive (B+), the readiness code must be generated again, see READINESS CODE, SETTING .
