Test sequence

• Connect V.A.G 1551/1552 Scan Tool. See VAG 1551 SCAN TOOL, CONNECTING .
• Start engine and let idle.
• Press -0- and -1- buttons to select address word 01: " Engine electronics".

• Press --> button.

Indicated on display:

• Press buttons -0- and -8- for "Read measured value block" and confirm with -Q- button.

Indicated on display:

• Press buttons -0-, -0- and -6- for "Display group number -6-" and confirm with -Q- button.
• Observe display in display field 4.

If 255 is displayed in display field 4:

Vehicles with automatic transmission only:

Test drive and exceed a speed of 30 km/h (approx. 19 mph) once. Then switch off engine and leave selector lever in position 2, 3 or D.

Observe safety procedures during test drive, see SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .

• Set parking brake.
  NOTE: On vehicles with an automatic transmission CCS switch will not be supplied with voltage until vehicle speed exceeds 30 km/h (20 mph) and the selector lever is in position 2, 3 or D. Once the switch has been supplied with voltage it will also remain live at idle provided a forward gear is selected.

• Check CCS switch specification in display field 3.

• Press --> button.
• Press buttons -0- and -6- for "End output" and confirm with -Q- button.
• Switch off ignition.

If specifications are not obtained:

• Remove wiper arms and cowl panel:

  See Plenum Cover Emoval & Installation

• Connect test box VAG 1598/22 (through my 1999) or VAG 1598/31 (from my 2000) to Engine Control Module (ECM) -J248- wiring harness.

• Check wiring from Engine Control Module (ECM) to CCS operating switch for open/short circuits:
• Check DTC memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and erase DTC memory. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) MEMORY, CHECKING AND ERASING .
• Display readiness code, see READINESS CODE, DISPLAYING . If DTC memory has been erased or Engine Control Module (ECM) was disconnected reset readiness code. See READINESS CODE, SETTING .
