Assembling Planetary Transmission
- An exchange component is available for repair work on the automatic transmission 01P, which includes all shift elements and the valve body.
- The exchange component is allocated to the transmission code. See CODE LETTERS, TRANSMISSION ALLOCATION, RATIOS, EQUIPMENT .
Install new O-ring -arrow- in planet carrier. See Fig 1 .
Insert axial needle bearing with washers and planet carrier in the input gear. See Fig 2 .
Place washer and axial needle bearing on the "small sun gear" in the planet carrier. See Fig 3 .
Center washer and axial needle bearing in small sun gear.
Insert shim and inner and outer -B1- plates in correct order. See III - FREEWHEEL AND REVERSE GEAR BRAKE -B1-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
If an exchange component is installed, brake -B1- need not be adjusted.
Determine shim size. See REVERSE GEAR BRAKE -B1-, ADJUSTING .
Insert pressure plate with flat side facing plates.
Thickness of pressure plate varies according to number of plates. Replacement part is allocated according to transmission code letters.
Insert dished washer with convex facing toward freewheel. See Fig 4 .
When replacing any of the following elements, then adjust -B1-. See REVERSE GEAR BRAKE -B1-, ADJUSTING .
- Transmission housing
- Freewheel
- Piston for reverse gear brake -B1-
- Plates
Preload freewheel rollers with assembly ring 3267 and insert free wheel. See Fig 5 .
Install circlip for freewheel -b- and circlip for supporting tube -a-. See Fig 6 . Insert circlip gaps over freewheel retaining wedge (arrow).
Install transmission vehicle speed sensor (VSS) -G38-. See VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS) -G68- in DIAGNOSIS - 01P article.
Perform measurement check of -B1-. See Reverse Gear Brake -B1- Check Measurement .
Insert components into transmission housing starting with the large sun wheel down to small input shaft. See Fig 7 .
Install small drive axle bolt -1- with washer -2- and shim -3-. See Fig 8 . Tighten to 30 Nm.
Perform planet carrier check measurement. See Planet Carrier Check Measurement .
Insert new O-ring in the recess in the turbine shaft (arrow). See Fig 9 . Moisten O-ring with ATF.
On some transmissions the clutches -K1- and -K3- must be pressed together before installing.
If an exchange component is being installed, the clutches already pressed together can be installed as well.
Non-pressed clutches: Check that clutch -K1- can be installed completely onto turbine shaft splines of -K3-. Do this by installing -K1- onto -K3- by hand.
If the splines -arrow 1- are visible in the -K1- hub as seen in Fig 10 , then both clutches must be pressed together first. See Pressing Clutch -K1- Onto -K3- .
If resistance of O-ring is overcome when connecting together (by hand!), then the splines -arrow 1- in -K1- is not visible. See Fig 11 . In this case the clutches do not need to be pressed together. Continue to assemble the transmission.
Install axial needle bearing with washer to 3rd and 4th gear clutch -K3-. See Fig 12 . Moisten axial needle bearing washer with ATF so that the bearing, when installing sticks to -K3-. Insert bearing washer on -K3-.
Make sure piston rings seat correctly on -K3-. See Fig 13 . Make sure that the ends of the piston rings are hooked together.
Inserting 3rd and 4th gear clutch -K3-. Install seal -1- in the groove (arrow). See Fig 14 . Moisten O-ring with ATF.
Inserting 1st to 3rd gear clutch -K1-. See Fig 15 . If -K1- and -K3- are pressed together, both clutches can only be inserted together.
Insert shims -arrow- in -K1-. See Fig 16 .
- When replacing -K1-, -K2-, ATF pump or when installing an exchange component, redetermine shim thickness. See CLUTCH CLEARANCE BETWEEN -K1- AND -K2-, ADJUSTING .
- Up to 3 shims can be installed.
Insert reverse gear clutch -K2-. See Fig 17 .
Insert supporting tube for -B2- plate set in such a way that the supporting tube recess engages in the retaining wedge of the freewheel.
- the transmission housing
- Supporting tube
- the ATF pump
- corrugated spring washer or retaining ring
- or the plates
then the 2nd and 4th gear brakes -B2- are to be adjusted. See 2ND AND 4TH GEAR BRAKE -B2-, ADJUSTING .
These components are allocated as replacement parts according to transmission code letters. If an exchange component is installed, brake -B2- need not be adjusted.
Install -B2- plates as follows:
- First insert a 3 mm thick outer plate
- Insert three spring caps in outer plate
- Insert compression springs (arrows). See Fig 18 .
- Insert all but the last outer plate
- Insert three spring caps onto compression springs.
Only on transmissions with installed corrugated spring washer is the clearance of brake -B2- determined by the last outer plate thickness.
Determine thickness of plate as described. See 2ND AND 4TH GEAR BRAKE -B2-, ADJUSTING .
If an exchange component is installed, brake -B2- need not be adjusted.
Insert last (measured) outer plate. Install corrugated washer.
On all other transmissions (with retaining ring -b-) the last outer plate is always 3 mm thick. The clearance of brake -B2- is determined by a shim -a-, on which the retaining ring -b- seats. See Fig 19 . A corrugated spring washer is not present. Install shim -a-. Insert retaining ring -b- onto shim. Smooth side facing shim.
Insert last outer plate (3 mm thick). Determine shim. See 2ND AND 4TH GEAR BRAKE -B2-, ADJUSTING . If an exchange component is installed, brake -B2- need not be adjusted.
If installed, clean strainer. Install strainer. See Figure . Strainer is located in ATF cooler pipe.
Install ATF pump seal. Moisten O-ring with ATF and fit to ATF pump.
Insert ATF pump and press in by hand to stop. See Fig 20 . Tighten bolts evenly, diagonal.
Carry out check measurement of clutch clearance. See Check Measurement (Clutch Clearance) .
Insert sealing plugs with O-rings -arrow-. See Figure . Installation position: Lug engages in oil channel.
Install valve body with conductor strip and sump. See VALVE BODY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Install cover with gasket and spacer bushings. Tighten to 8 Nm.
Screw in ATF overflow pipe -1- and sealing plug -2- with new seal hand tight. See Fig 21 .
Note version of turbine shaft. See TORQUE CONVERTER, IDENTIFICATION under TORQUE CONVERTER.
Install torque converter.
Install transmission. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - A/T (01P) article.
Fill with 3 liters of ATF. Check ATF level and top-off as necessary. See SERVICING - A/T (01P) article.
