Coolant Fan Control THERMOSWITCH

  1. Ensure engine is cold. Connect Scan Tester (VAG 1551) to Data Link Connector (DLC) located in center console, in front of shift lever.
  2. Start engine and allow to idle. With scan tester in READ TEST VALUE BLOCK function, select group No. 01 and monitor coolant temperature value in field No. 2 of scan tester.
  3. Using a voltmeter, backprobe between ground and Red wire at coolant fan control thermoswitch. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check for an open or short to ground in Red wire. Repair as necessary.
  4. Backprobe between ground and appropriate wire terminals at coolant fan control thermoswitch. Ensure radiator cooling fan motor operates at specified temperatures. See COOLANT FAN CONTROL THERMOSWITCH PERFORMANCE  table.
  5. Replace thermoswitch if battery voltage is not present at specified temperatures. If battery voltage is present, but radiator cooling fan motor does not operate, check for faulty wiring harness, connections, fan motor or coolant fan control module.
