Power steering pump delivery pressure, checking: Checking
- Disconnect pressure line from power steering pump.
- Install adapter and gauge (valve in open position).
- A - Adaptor fitting US 1074/4A
- B - Hydraulic fitting VW 1402/1A
- C - Hose from adapter set VAG 1402/6
- D - Power steering pressure gauge US 1074B
- Start engine and if necessary add fluid to reservoir.
- With engine idling, close valve of US 1074/B (not longer than 5 seconds) and check pressure.
Specification: 85-95 bar (1233-1378 psi)
NOTE:
- If the pressure reading is higher or lower than specified, replace power steering pump: vehicles up to 115 hp engine, see POWER STEERING PUMP, SERVICING (VEHICLES WITH 1.8, 1.9 AND 2.0 LITER ENGINES) , and for vehicles with 172 hp engine see POWER STEERING PUMP, SERVICING (VEHICLES WITH 2.8 LITER VR6 ENGINE) .
- If fluid in reservoir is low always check the steering system for leaks.
- If leaking at pinion first check the hose/line connections for leaks and if necessary tighten and wipe dry.
- For leaks at pinion seal or the rack seals in steering gear housing: repair or replace the steering gear.
- To check the rack seals loosen clamp on boot and push boot back.
