Notes for test table

TEST STEP 1

Set measurement range:
voltage test (20 V =)

1 19 + 15 Voltage supply to control module via terminal 15
  • Ignition switched on.
10.0 to 14.5 V
  • Check wire from terminal 19 to Ground (GND).
  • Check wire from terminal 15 to terminal 15.
TEST STEP 2

Set measurement range:

2 16 + 17 Voltage supply of ABS hydraulic unit -N55- and motor for ABS return flow pump -V39- via terminal 30, B+
  • Ignition switched on.
10.0 to 14.5 V
  • Check wire from terminal 16 to Ground (GND).
16 + 18 10.0 to 14.5 V
  • Check wiring from terminals 17 and 18 to B+ (terminal 30) via fuse (60A).
TEST STEP 3

Set measurement range:

  • Ignition switched off
  • Brake pedal not depressed
  • Operate brake pedal.

  • Check wire from terminal 19 to Ground (GND).
  • Check wiring from terminal 14 to terminal 30 via fuse (10A).
  • Check brake light switch -F-
  • Adjust brake light switch -F-, see BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH -F-, ADJUSTING 
TEST STEPS 4 & 5

Set measurement range:
Resistance measurement (2 k Ω)

Specified value  Corrective action 
4 4 + 5 Resistance of right front ABS wheel speed sensor -G45- (Vehicles with ABS, ABS/EDL and all wheel drive with EDL)
  • Ignition switched off
0.4 to 2.3k Ω
  • Check electrical wiring between control module and wheel speed sensor for open circuit and for short circuit to Ground (GND) or B+
3 + 5 Resistance of right front ABS wheel speed sensor -G45- (Vehicles with EDL/ASR)
  • Check harness connectors.
  • Move wire during test (loose contact).
5 6 + 7 (all versions) Resistance of left front ABS wheel speed sensor - G47-
  • Replace the relevant ABS wheel speed sensor if specified value is not obtained and the electrical wiring is OK.
TEST STEPS 6 & 7

Set measurement range:
Resistance measurement (2 k Ω)

6 1 + 3 Resistance of right rear ABS wheel speed sensor -G44- (Vehicles with ABS, ABS/EDL)
  • Ignition switched off
0.4 to 2.3k Ω
  • Check electrical wiring between control module and wheel speed sensor for open circuits and for short circuit to Ground (GND) or B+
1 + 2 Resistance of right rear ABS wheel speed sensor -G44- (Vehicles with EDL/ASR and all wheel drive with EDL)
  • Check harness connectors.
  • Move wire during test (loose contact).
7 8 + 9 (all versions) Resistance of left rear ABS wheel speed sensor - G46-
  • Replace the relevant ABS wheel speed sensor if specified value is not obtained and the electrical wiring is OK.
TEST STEPS 8 & 9

Set measurement range:
Voltage measurement (20 V =) in test step 8, resistance measurement (200 Ω) in test step 9

8 - Voltage supply for VAG1551, harness connector T16 Connect VAG1526 multimeter to T16(1) using VAG1594 connector test kit  
  • Check wire from T16/4 to Ground (GND).
  • Check wire from T16/16 to terminal 30 via S12.

Terminal 16 - B+
10.0 to 14.5 V  
9 - Resistance of the K-wire for On Board Diagnostic (OBD), harness connector T16
  • Ignition switched off
  • Using the VAG1594 connector test kit, connect socket 11 of the VAG1598 test box and terminal 7 of the T16 harness connector to the VAG1526 multimeter.
max: 1.5 Ω
  • Check wire from terminal T16/7 to terminal 11.

TEST STEP 10 (1 OF 3)

Function test: ABS warning light -K47-

  • DTC memory checked and no DTC present in DTC memory of ABS control module -J104-.
  • Ignition switched off
  • Multi-pin connector connected to ABS control module -J104- and retainer catch engaged.

Function test: ABS warning light -K47-

Continuation:
- Function of ABS warning light -K47-.
  • Switch on ignition
ABS warning light -K47- lights up for two (2) seconds and then goes out.
  • If ABS warning lamp does not light up:
    • Check vehicle voltage and wire from terminal 21 of ABS control module - J104- to instrument cluster for short circuit to Ground (GND).
  • The ABS warning lamp does not switch off after 2 seconds.
  • After 3 seconds, the warning light for brake system -K118- will light up.
  • Check wire from terminal 21 of ABS control module - J104- to instrument cluster for short circuit to B+ and open circuit.

Function test: ABS warning light -K47-

ABS warning light -K47- lights up for two (2) seconds and then goes out.
  • If the vehicle voltage and the wiring from terminal 21 of ABS control module -J104- to the instrument cluster are OK: The LED lights or warning lamps are faulty.
TEST STEP 11

Function test: Warning light for brake system -K118-

  • Brake fluid level is OK.
  • Ignition switched off
  • Multi-pin connector connected to ABS control module - J104- and retainer catch engaged.
  • Switch on ignition.
Warning light for brake system - K118- lights up for two -2- seconds and then goes out again.
  • Check warning contact for brake fluid.
  • Check wire from terminal T32a/29 (instrument cluster) to warning contact for brake fluid for short circuit to Ground (GND).
  • Malfunction in instrument cluster.
TEST STEP 12 (1 OF 2)

Function test: Traction control indicator light -K86- (only installed in vehicles with ASR).

  • DTC memory checked and no DTC present in DTC memory of ABS control module -J104-.
  • Ignition switched off

Function test: Traction control indicator light -K86- (only installed in vehicles with ASR).

Continuation:
- Function of traction control indicator light -K86-
  • Switch on ignition
Traction control indicator light - K86- comes on for two (2) seconds and then goes out.
  • If traction control (ASR) indicator lamp does not light up:
    • Check vehicle voltage and wire from terminal 20 of ABS control module - J104- to instrument cluster for open circuit and short circuit to B+.
  • If traction control (ASR) indicator lamp remains constantly lit:
    • Check wire from terminal 20 of ABS control module - J104- to instrument cluster for short circuit to Ground (GND).

    =>Electrical Wiring Diagrams, Troubleshooting & Component Locations 

  • If the vehicle voltage and the wiring from terminal 20 of ABS control module -J104- to the instrument cluster are OK: The LED lights or warning lamps are faulty.

    See appropriate Instrument cluster .

TEST STEP 13 (1 OF 2)

Function test: Traction control (ASR) button (Only for vehicles with ASR)

13 - Function of traction control button
  • Switch ignition off.
  • Function of traction control indicator light - K86- was already checked in step 8.
  • Multi-pin connector connected to ABS control module -J104- and retainer catch engaged.
  • Switch on ignition
   
  • Press traction control button
Traction control indicator light - K86- lights up
  • Switch off ignition.
  • Detach multi-pin connector from ABS control module -J104- and remove.
  • Press traction control button again
Traction control indicator light - K86- goes out.
  • Connect VAG1598 test box using VAG1598/27 adapter.

TEST STEP 13 (2 OF 2)

Function test: Traction control (ASR) button (Only for vehicles with ASR)

  • Check wire from terminal 19 to Ground (GND).
  • Check wire from terminal 31 to traction control button, terminal 6.
  • Check voltage supply from terminal 5 of traction control button to terminal 15.
  • If no malfunctions can be found using the procedures in these steps, replace the traction control button.
TEST STEP 14

Set measurement range: 
Resistance measurement (200 Ω/20 M Ω)

  • Ignition switched off
  • Set measuring range to 200 Ω
  • Disconnect multi-pin connectors from the control modules that are connected vie a databus wire.
   
  • Check databus wires for open circuit.
max: 1.5 Ω
  • Check wire routing according to wiring diagram
     
  • Set measuring range to 20 MΩ
  • Check wires for short circuit to B+ or Ground (GND).
INFINITY Ω
  • Repair wire connections according to wiring diagram.
