Checking Activation
- Turn ignition off. Remove fuel pump fuse No. 18 from instrument panel fuse panel. Fuse panel is located in driver's side instrument panel endcap.
- Using an LED equipped test light, probe specified terminals while operating starter. See CHECKING COIL ACTIVATION
table. See Figure
. LED must flicker while starter is cranking. If LED flickers as specified, go to next step. If LED does not flicker as specified, go to step 6
.

- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Engine Control Module (ECM) harness connector. Connect Test Box (VAG 1598/18) to ECM harness connector, leave ECM disconnected. Check for open in circuits between ignition coil harness connector terminal and VAG test box as follows:
- Terminal No. 2 & VAG Test Box Socket No. 8
- Terminal No. 3 & VAG Test Box Socket No. 60
- Terminal No. 4 & VAG Test Box Socket No. 52
Maximum circuit resistance is 1.5 ohms. If no problem is found, leave VAG box connected and go to next step. If problem is found, repair open in wiring between ignition coil and ECM as necessary.
- Check for short to each other in circuits between ignition coil harness connector terminal and VAG test box as follows:
- Terminal No. 2 & VAG Test Box Socket No. 60
- Terminal No. 2 & VAG Test Box Socket No. 52
- Terminal No. 3 & VAG Test Box Socket No. 52
Resistance reading should be infinity. If no problem with wiring is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair shorted wiring between ignition coil and ECM as necessary.
- If no problem is found with wiring and voltage supply is as specified during voltage supply check, replace ignition coil. After repair, check for and clear any DTCs stored in ECM memory. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in appropriate ENGINE PERFORMANCE - AUDI article.
- Replace ECM. See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE in appropriate REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - AUDI article. After repair, check for and clear any DTCs stored in ECM memory. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in appropriate ENGINE PERFORMANCE - AUDI article.
