NOTE: This bulletin supersedes Technical Bulletin Group 28, No. 97-01 dated February 28, 1997.

SERVICE INFORMATION

This Bulletin includes new information which will be integrated into the Repair Manual at the next update.

NOTE: The following procedure ALSO applies to distributor installation on updated 2.0L engines installed as a running change late in m.y. 1996. These engines are identified by markings "AD" (for 47 State) or "AE" (for CA, MA & NY) on the left side of the cylinder head. Updated engines can also be recognized by distributors without the two distributor mounting bolt locating pins.

DISTRIBUTOR, INSTALLING CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR PHASE DEVIATION, CHECKING

NOTE:
  • The following procedure must be performed after distributor installation on vehicles from m.y. 1997. It also applies to updated 2.0L engines installed as a running change late in m.y. 1996. These engines are identified by the marking "AD" on the left side of the cylinder head on 47 State versions, and the marking "AE"on CA, MA & NY versions. All updated engines have distributors without two locating pins at the distributor mounting bolt.
  • This procedure must always be carried out after the following repairs:

    - installing distributor

    - installing drive belt

    - installing camshaft and/or camshaft sprocket

    - installing drive belt tensioner

    - installing crankshaft sprocket

    or any repairs where drive belt removal and installation is necessary.

  • Failure to perform this procedure may result in a MIL ON condition and appropriate DTC loaded.

SPECIAL TOOLS, TESTERS AND AUXILIARY ITEMS

VAG 1551/1552 scan tool with VAG 1551/3 adapter cable.

REQUIREMENT

Distributor properly installed.

TEST CONDITIONS

  • Engine running at idle speed.
  • Engine oil temperature at least 80°C (176°F)
  • Electrical consumers switched off (radiator fan must not run during the check) and air conditioner switched off.

TEST SEQUENCE

- Connect VAG 1551 scan tool (VAG 1552) and select "Engine

Electronics" address word 01.

Display will show the following: See Fig 1 .

- Press buttons -0- and -8- to select "Read Measuring Value Block" function 08 and press Q button to confirm input.

Display will show the following: See Fig 2 .

- Press buttons -0-, -1- and -8- to input display group 018 and press -Q- button to confirm input.

Display will show the following: (1 - 4 = Display fields). SeeFig 3 .

- Check measured value for display field 3 (CMP Phase Deviation): See Fig 4

- Read the readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased, repair mustbe verified via appropriate display group/field.

- Press --> button.

- Press buttons -0- and -6- for the "End output" function and press -Q- button to confirm input.

CONTINUATION

- Loosen distributor mounting bolt.

- Turn distributor until 1551/1552 display field -3- reads 0.0/°.

- Tighten distributor mounting bolt.

Tightening torque: 25 N.m (18 ft-lb)

- Check DTC memory and erase if necessary.

- Create the readiness code.

If the specification is again not reached, or if MIL "ON" and DTC 16725 is present:

- Check for proper installation of distributor (all marks line-up).

- Check engine mechanical timing and condition. Verify timing of crankshaft/ vibration damper, intermediate shaft/intermediate shaft sprocket, distributor, and camshaft/camshaft sprocket with No.1 cylinder at TDC. See Repair Manual, General Engine, Repair Group 13.

- Check engine operating condition.
