DTC P0116/16500: ECT Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

NOTE: DTC is set when Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is out of range or performance is poor.
  1. Ensure ignition is off. Allow engine to cool to at least 86°F (30°C). Disconnect ECT sensor connector. Connect ohmmeter to ECT sensor terminals. Run engine at idle.
  2. While engine is running, sensor resistance should decline slowly without interruption to about 275-375 ohms. If sensor resistance stops moving before operating temperature has been reached, or if a resistance of at least 400 ohms is not reached, replace ECT sensor.
