SERVICE
To assist the Technician in Troubleshooting customer complaints relating to the Oxygen (O2) Sensors, the following diagnostic test procedure was developed.
Follow the Repair procedure associated with the existing condition:
CONDITION 1 - SINGLE DTC
| Diagnostic Code DTC SAE | VAG | Malfunction Text |
|---|---|---|
| P0133 | 16517 | O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 1, Sensor 1) |
Go to Repair Manual 2 0 Liter OBD II VAG 1551 Fuel Injection & Ignition (W42 011 294 121A) page 24-58 and perform workshop diagnosis for Display Group 130.
If results are OK, do not replace Bank 1 Sensor 1 (Pre-Sensor). Condition may be due to Bank 1 Sensor 2 (Post-Sensor). Perform the following:
Go to Repair Manual 2 0 Liter OBD II VAG 1551 Fuel Injection & Ignition (W42 011 294 121A) page 24-60 and check Display Group 131 (Channel 3) for high delay time.
- Normal is +/- 700ms
Check Display Group 131 (Channel 4).
- If bit 7=1 and Group 130 diagnosis is OK then condition is most likely due to the rear Sensor.
If results are as listed above:
Go to Repair Manual 2.0 Liter OBD II VAG 1551 Fuel Injection & Ignition (W42 011 294 121A), page 24-48 and check basic voltage at ECM connector.
If basic voltage checks OK then:
Reconnect Bank 1 Sensor 2 (Post-Sensor).
Go to Repair Manual 2.0 Liter OBD II VAG 1551 Fuel Injection & Ignition (W42 011 294 121A), page 24-44 and check Display Group 116 (Channel 3).
- At 2500 rpm with Catalytic Converter temperature at 360°C minimum the voltage should be fairly stable (between 500mV and 650mV).
Wiggle wires at Bank 1 Sensor 2 (Post-Sensor) -B-. See Fig 1 .
If voltage changes erratically, then wiring is most likely the cause. For example: approx. 450mV (steady or constant) indicates an inactive Post-Sensor (Sensor should be replaced).
WARRANTY INFORMATION - CONDITION 1
When procedure applies to vehicles within warranty use the following:
PART IDENTIFIER: 2469
LABOR OPERATION: 2469710 80 TU
CONDITION 2 - COMBINATION DTC
| Diagnostic Code DTC SAE | VAG | Malfunction Text |
|---|---|---|
| P0133 | 16517 | O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 1, Sensor 1) |
| P0140 | 16524 | O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank 1, Sensor 2) |
Use the same procedure as condition 1.
WARRANTY INFORMATION - CONDITION 2
When procedure applies to vehicles within warranty use the following:
PART IDENTIFIER: 2469
LABOR OPERATION: 2469710 80 TU
CONDITION 3 - COMBINATION DTC
| Diagnostic Code DTC SAE | VAG | Malfunction Text |
|---|---|---|
| P0134 | 16518 | O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank 1, Sensor 1) |
| P0135 | 16519 | O2 Sensor Circuit Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1, Sensor 1) |
Go to Repair Manual 2.0 Liter OBD II VAG 1551 Fuel Injection & Ignition (W42 011 294 121A) page 24-37 and perform workshop diagnosis Group 120.
If results of diagnosis are OK:
Go to Repair Manual 2.0 Liter OBD II VAG 1551 Fuel Injection & Ignition (W42 011 294 121A) page 21-40.
Using a multimeter measure resistance between pins 1 and 2 of disconnected Bank 1 Sensor 1 (Pre-Sensor -A-). See Fig 1 .
- Wiggle wires at Pre-Sensor -A- while watching the resistance.
If resistance is greater than 24 Ohms or is erratic, the Pre-Sensor -A- heater is malfunctioning (Pre-Sensor should be replaced).
