Multi-Function Indicator Switches Test

NOTE: Refer to WIRING DIAGRAMS  for terminal identification.
  1. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect 4-pin connector located behind steering column trim. Using Connector Test Kit (VW 1594), connect negative ohmmeter lead to terminal No. 1 of 4-pin connector. Connect positive ohmmeter lead to terminal No. 2. Press Multi-Funktions-Anzeige (MFA) mode select switch and hold. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace mode select switch.
  2. Connect negative ohmmeter lead to terminal No. 1 of 4-pin connector. Connect positive ohmmeter lead to terminal No. 2. Slide MAF memory select switch to "1" position. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace memory select switch.
  3. Slide MFA memory select switch from "1" position to "0" (full left) position and hold. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace memory select switch.
  4. Connect negative ohmmeter lead to terminal No. 1 of 4-pin connector. Connect positive ohmmeter lead to terminal No. 2. Slide MAF memory select switch to "2" position. If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exist, replace memory select switch.
  5. Slide MFA memory select switch from "2" position to "0" (full right) position and hold. If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, replace memory select switch.
  6. Connect negative ohmmeter lead to terminal No. 1 of 4-pin connector. Connect positive ohmmeter lead to terminal No. 4. Slide MAF memory select switch from "1" position to "0" (full left) position, then from "2" position to "0" (full right) position. If continuity exists in "0" position, go to next step. If continuity does not exist in "0" position, replace memory select switch.
  7. Connect negative ohmmeter lead to known good ground. Connect positive ohmmeter lead to terminal No. 1 of 4-pin connector. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, check wiring harness for open (ground) circuit.
  8. Ensure ignition is off. Remove instrument cluster, and disconnect 28-pin connector from cluster. Using Wiring Harness Adapter (VAG 1598/8), connect Test Box (VAG 1598) to instrument cluster wiring harness. DO NOT  connect instrument cluster to test box.
  9. Connect negative ohmmeter lead to test box pin No. 15. Connect positive ohmmeter lead to terminal No. 2 of 4-pin wiring harness connector. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, check wiring harness for open.
  10. Connect negative ohmmeter lead to test box pin No. 6. Connect positive ohmmeter lead to terminal No. 3 of 4-pin wiring harness connector. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, check wiring harness for open.
  11. Connect negative ohmmeter lead to test box pin No. 4. Connect positive ohmmeter lead to terminal No. 4 of 4-pin wiring harness connector. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, check wiring harness for open.
  12. Connect negative ohmmeter lead to test box pin No. 5. Connect positive ohmmeter lead to terminal No. 1 of 4-pin wiring harness connector. If continuity exists, mode select switch, memory select switch and their respective circuits are okay. If continuity does not exist, check wiring harness for open.
