SERVICE INFORMATION
The following article contains a revised procedure for creating the Readiness Code. This information supersedes the procedure found in your current Repair Manual and will be integrated during the next Repair Manual update.
To display Readiness Codes the VAG 1551 Scan Tool must meet the following requirements:
- Must have a 5.0 (or higher) Program Card installed
- Must be properly encoded with the Workshop Code

Study the following chart. Pay special attention to bits 5, 6, 7 and 8.

- If a particular bit that you are watching in the Readiness code is obtained sooner than the time specified in the procedure, you can immediately proceed to the next work step.
- There must not be a malfunction stored in DTC memory and there must be no malfunctions detected during diagnosis.
- During the test sequence the ignition must not be switched off.
SPECIAL TOOLS, TESTERS AND AUXILIARY ITEMS
- VAG 1551/1552 scan tool with VAG 1551/3 adapter cable
TEST SEQUENCE
Connect VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool (with ignition switched ON) and select address word 01 "Engine Electronics".
WORK STEP: 1
Display will show the following:
Press buttons -0- and -2- to select "Check DTC Memory" function 02 and press -Q- button to confirm input.
The number of malfunctions stored or"No DTC recognized" will be shown on the display.

Display will show the following:
Press buttons -0- and -5- to select "Erase DTC Memory" function 05 and press -Q- button to confirm input.

Diagnosis: To check throttle body adaptation
Display will show the following:
Switch ON ignition but do NOT start engine.
Press buttons -0- and -4- to select "Basic Setting" function 04 and press -Q- button to confirm input.
Display will show the following:
Press buttons -0-, -9- and -8- to Input display group 098 and press -Q- button to confirm input.
Display will show the following (1-4 = Display fields):
Check the specifications in display fields 3 and 4.

Start engine and let idle.

Diagnosis: Leak diagnosis for tank venting system
Display will show the following:
Press buttons -0- and -4- to select "Basic Setting" function 04 and press -Q- button to confirm input.

Run engine at idle and check specifications after 60 seconds.

Diagnosis: Engine warmup
Press buttons -0- and -8- to select "Read Measuring Value Block" function 08 and press -Q- button to confirm input.

Increase engine speed to 3000-3500 RPM and check specifications after 60 seconds.

Diagnosis: Secondary Air Injection system
- Vehicle stationary
Display will show the following:

Start engine and let idle check specifications after 20 seconds.

Diagnosis: Engine warmup continued (calculated temperature of Three Way Catalytic converter)
Display will show the following:
Press buttons -0- and -8- to select "Read Measuring Value Block" function 08 and press -Q- button to confirm input.
Display will show the following:
Press buttons -1-, -0- and -3- to input display group 103 and press -Q- button to confirm input.
Display will show the following (1-4 = Display fields):
Increase engine speed to 2200-3300 RPM and wait until catalyst temperature (field 3) reaches specification.

Diagnosis: H02S aging (regulating frequency extended)
Display will show the following:
Press buttons -0- and -4- to select "Basic Settings" function 04 and press -Q- button to confirm input.

Diagnosis: Fuel adaptation under partial load
Display will show the following:
Press buttons -1-, -2- and -5- to input display group 125 and press -Q- button to confirm input.

Test drive per the following conditions:
ROAD TEST PROCEDURE
- 10 minutes duration minimum
- Engine coolant temperature 80°C (176°F) minimum
Briefly depress accelerator pedal to wide open throttle (once during road test) and accelerate until rpm's exceed 5000.
Cruise between 2700-3000 RPM for 4 seconds with NO decels.
- Automatic transmission: Drive range 2
- Manual transmission: 2nd gear
Check specs during test drive (second technician necessary).

Diagnosis: Fuel adaptation during idle
TEST CONDITIONS
- Bring vehicle to stationary position and let idle

Check specifications after 30 seconds.

Diagnosis: HO2S aging (regulating frequency extended)
TEST CONDITIONS
- Vehicle stationary

Raise engine RPM to 2500-3500 for 20 seconds and check specs.

Diagnosis: Three Way Catalytic Converter
Press buttons -0- and -4- to select "Basic Setting" function 04 and press -Q- button to Confirm Input.
Display will show the following:
Press buttons -1-, -3- and -6- to input display group 136 and press -Q- button to confirm input.
Display will show the following (1-4 = Display fields):
Increase engine speed to 2500-3500 RPM and check specifications after 120 seconds.
Press -C- button.
WORK STEP: 14
Diagnosis: Tank venting system (EVAP canister purge regulator valve)
- Vehicle stationary
- All electrical consumers switched off (coolant fan must not run)
- A/C switched off
Press buttons -0- and -4- to select "Basic Setting" function 04 and press -Q- button to confirm input.
Display will show the following:
Press buttons -1-, -5- and -0- to input display group 150 and press -Q- button to confirm input.
Display will show the following (1-4 = Display fields):
Run engine for 30 seconds at idle; check specifications.

Read readiness code.
If the readiness code not OK
Perform optional work steps 16 through 24.

Diagnosis: Vehicle Speed Sensor
Display will show the following:
Press buttons -0- and -4- to select "Basic Settings function 04 and press -Q- button to confirm input.
Display will show the following:
Press buttons -1-, -8- and -0- to input display group 180 and press -Q- button to confirm input.
Display will show the following (1-4 = Display fields):
Test drive per the following conditions:
Hold engine speed above 3500 RPM for 5 seconds...
- Automatic transmission: Drive range 2
- Manual transmission: 3rd gear
... then release accelerator pedal for 3 seconds.
- After 3 seconds vehicle speed must still be 20 km/h (13 mph).
Check specs during test drive (second technician necessary).

Diagnosis: Knock Sensor
TEST CONDITIONS
- Vehicle stationary
Press buttons -0- and -4- to select "Basic Setting" function 04 and press -Q- button to confirm input.
Display will show the following:
Press buttons -1-, -4- and -5- to input display group 145 and press -Q- button to confirm input.
Display will show the following (1-4 = Display fields):
Increase engine speed to at least 3200 RPM and check specifications after 15 seconds.

Diagnosis: HO2S (before three way catalytic converter)
Display will show the following:
Press buttons -0- and -8- to select "Read Measuring Value Block" function 08 and press -Q- button to confirm input.

Increase engine speed to 2200-2800 RPM and check specs.

Diagnosis: HO2S (after three way catalytic converter)

Rev engine from idle to 3000 RPM in a single throttle application; check specifications during deceleration phase.
