Camshaft Position Sensor: Testing and Inspection

Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor, checking

Requirements
^ Malfunction of CMP Sensor identified by On Board Diagnostic program and stored in Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Memory Testing and Inspection
^ Electrical test step 18 - OK Pinout Values and Diagnostic Parameters


- Disconnect Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor harness connector (at Ignition Distributor).
- Switch hand multimeter (Fluke 83 or equivalent) to 20 Volt range.




- Connect multimeter between connector outer terminals using cables from VW 1594 adapter kit.
- Switch ignition ON.
^ Specification: 9 Volts (minimum)

If OK (but malfunction stored in DTC Memory):
- Replace Ignition Distributor complete with CMP Sensor.

If NO Voltage:
- Replace Mono-Motronic Engine Control Module (J257).

- Switch ignition OFF.
