Anti-Lock Brake System & Traction Control: Description

Corrado SLC and Passat use a Teves Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS). See Figure or Figure . These systems reduce the chance of wheel lock-up during heavy braking. On Corrado SLC and Passat with 4-cylinder engines, the system consists of 4 wheel speed sensors, Electronic Control Unit (ECU), hydraulic modulator/pump and solenoid valves, ANTILOCK and BRAKE warning lights. There are 2 relays located at fuse/relay panel, to protect the hydraulic modulator and ECU. This system does not include traction control.

On all other models, the system consists of 4 wheel speed sensors, Electronic Control Unit (ECU), vacuum booster, master cylinder with split diagonal brake lines, brake pedal sensor (mounted on brake booster), hydraulic pump and solenoid valves, ANTILOCK and BRAKE warning lights. There are 3 relays located at fuse/relay panel, to protect the hydraulic modulator, traction control solenoids and ECU. This system includes traction control. Traction control operates at low speeds mainly during acceleration. The helps control excess wheel spin of the front wheels.

NOTE: For more brake system information, see BRAKE SYSTEM article in the BRAKES section.
