Fox 1.8L Digifant II (Federal)

  1. Ensure engine oil temperature is at least 176°F (80°C). Ensure idle and full throttle switches are correctly adjusted. See IDLE & FULL THROTTLE SWITCH ADJUSTMENTS in the ADJUSTMENTS article.
  2. Disconnect idle switch harness connector. Using test leads from Adapter Kit (VW 1594), connect center and left terminals of harness connector. Start engine and allow it to idle. Accelerate engine until 2150-4000 RPM is reached. Engine speed must surge.
  3. If engine speed does not fluctuate, disconnect engine coolant temperature sensor wiring harness. Connect Test Harness (VW 1490) to sensor wiring harness. If engine now surges, replace engine coolant temperature sensor.
  4. If engine still does not surge, reconnect engine coolant temperature sensor wiring harness. Check for an open circuit in wiring harness to either temperature sensor or throttle switch. If wiring harness is okay, replace electronic control module.
