Checking Fluid Level

  1. It is necessary to manufacture a special tool to check transaxle fluid level. Tool length should be .59" (15 mm) at dimension "a", and .87" (22 mm) at dimension "b". See Fig 1 . Remove fill plug on side of transaxle. Carefully insert special tool into transaxle. Special tool arm ("A") must lie against inner transaxle wall. See Fig 2 . Oil level is correct when transaxle fluid covers lower area of special tool arm (dimension "c"). Coverage should be about .39" (10 mm). See Fig 3 . Install fill plug and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 N.m).
  2. When filling dry transaxle with NEW transaxle fluid, remove fill plug and add 2.7 qts. (2.5L) of gear oil. Install fill plug. Start engine and engage transaxle in gear, and allow transaxle to rotate for about 2 minutes. Stop engine and remove fill plug. Insert special tool and check fluid level. Add fluid as necessary. Install fill plug and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 N.m).
