Cabriolet (1.8L)

  1. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Ensure engine oil temperature is 176°F (80°C). Ensure A/C and electrical loads are off, including radiator cooling fan. Ensure no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) are stored.
  2. Connect Engine Analyzer (VAG 1367) and Inductive Pick-Up (VAG 1367/8) to engine. Connect CO tester using Adapter (VAG 1363/3) on CO tap tube. DO NOT remove oxygen sensor. Ensure exhaust system has no leaks. Ensure idle air control (idle stabilizer) valve is okay. Valve must vibrate or hum.
  3. On California (Digifant I) models, disconnect Blue Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. Increase engine speed to 2000-2500 RPM and check ignition timing. If necessary, adjust ignition timing by rotating distributor.
  4. On Federal (Digifant II) models, start engine and raise engine speed to 2100 RPM a minimum of 4 times (allowing throttle to close each time). Disconnect Blue ECT sensor, increase engine speed to 2300 RPM, and check ignition timing. If necessary, adjust ignition timing by rotating distributor.
  5. On all models, reconnect Blue ECT sensor. Check and adjust idle speed if necessary. See IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE. Turn ignition off.
NOTE: On Cabriolet Digifant II models, the engine speed must be increased 4 times to clear fault memory and to cancel the hot-idle increase function. This procedure MUST be repeated each time engine is stopped and re-started during checking/adjustment procedures.
