Brake Light Switch: Service and Repair


Switches are located on master cylinder. Switch is accessible after removing instrument cluster.
1. Determine which switch is defective (this is accomplished by disconnecting wiring on one switch at a time and depressing the brake pedal. If brake lights are operative, reconnect wiring and disconnect other switch, recheck operation).
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Disconnect wiring from defective switch noting position of each wire, then remove switch.
4. Remove sealing washer from old switch and reinstall on new switch (if equipped) and install new switch. Torque to 14 ft. lbs.
5. Reconnect wiring and battery ground cable. Check operation of brake lights and brake warning light.
6. Bleed brakes if necessary.
