Servicing - M/T: Adjustments: Gearshift: Vanagon

  1. Place shift lever in neutral. Align holes of upper lever bearing plate with holes in lower lever bearing plate. Loosen shift rod clamp so selector lever moves freely on shift rod.
  2. Remove spare tire. Place transaxle lever in vertical position and push shift rod into transaxle until spring tension is felt. Keep shift rod in this position.
  3. Push shift rod to right and move in a longitudinal direction so that measurement between reverse gear lock stop and shift rod is 1/8". Let shift rod spring back into left shift position and push rod slightly to right. Boot must touch shift mechanism housing. Tighten clamp nut to 18 ft. lbs. (25 N.m).
  4. Place shift lever in 2nd gear and check distance between shift lever and heater covering. Measurement must be a minimum of 5/8". If not, move lever in slotted holes. Ensure all gears engage easily and without jamming, particularly reverse gear stop.
