Overhaul - V.A.G. Type 020: Description
4 and 5-speed transaxles are fully synchronized in all gears except reverse and are mounted transversely at the front of vehicle. Transaxle forward gears are all helical cut and are in constant mesh with mating gears of the pinion shaft.
Forward gear engagement is accomplished through blocker ring type synchronizer assemblies. Reverse gears are spur cut type and are not in constant mesh. They are engaged by a sliding type reverse idler gear.
Final drive portion of transaxle consists of a drive pinion shaft (which also carries some of the transaxle gears) and a differential and ring gear assembly. The 5th gear assembly is located on the end of the pinion and mainshaft in a separate housing.
