SERVICE INFORMATION

Ignition timing on some 5-speed CIS vehicles can only be checked and adjusted with tester VAG 1367.

These vehicles are in the following VIN range:

1VWFB0177EV010418 to 1VWAB0170EV064699

If tester VAG 1367 is not available, the flywheel must be marked at 6° BTDC to allow the use of a standard (strobe) timing light.

NOTE: Existing 3° ATDC timing mark in flywheel does not apply to 1984 Model Year vehicles.

Use the following procedure to locate and mark flywheel:

- Unscrew plastic plug in timing hole.

- Turn engine to TDC.

- Spray flywheel in this area with blue engineering dye.

- Use dividers or compass to scribe the flywheel 12.0 mm (0.47 in.) to left of TDC mark. See Fig 1 .

NOTE: Measure from the center of the "0".

- Use chisel to mark measured spot permanently.

- Check and adjust timing.

- Reinstall plastic plug.
