Automatic Choke

  1. Cold choke control is handled by electric/vacuum solenoid connected to choke diaphragm. Power to solenoid comes from manifold heater power wire. Ground is at back of cylinder head.
  2. Power to manifold heater is interrupted when ignition is in "cranking" mode. This interrupts power to solenoid, which sends manifold vacuum directly from intake manifold to choke diaphragm. Choke is opened slightly to allow air to flow into carburetor for starting.
  3. Power is supplied to solenoid through manifold heater when key is in "ON" position and engine is cold. Solenoid directs intake vacuum through check valve before vacuum goes to choke diaphragm. Check valve holds vacuum so choke will stay open under partial acceleration to provide smooth operation.
  4. When ignition is switched "OFF," solenoid routes vacuum back to intake manifold through hose without check valve. Trapped vacuum will bleed off at this time.
  5. To adjust, locate choke housing retainer notch to left of boss next to fuel inlet fitting.
