Description & Operation: Introduction

Transaxles are 4 or 5-speed, fully synchronized units, mounted transversely at the front of vehicle. Transmission gears are all helical cut and are in constant mesh with mating gears on countershaft.

Forward gear engagement is accomplished through blocker ring type synchronizer assemblies. Reverse gears are spur type and are not in constant mesh, and are engaged by a sliding type reverse idler gear.

Final drive portion of transaxle consists of a drive pinion shaft (which also carries some of the transmission gears), and a differential and ring gear assembly.

The 4-speed transmission and final drive components are carried in a common 2-piece case. The 5-speed is almost identical to the 4-speed except the 5th gear assembly is located on the end of the pinion and mainshaft in a separate housing.

Transaxle codes (020 for 4-speed, 020F for 5-speed) are stamped on lower side of transaxle case, adjacent to left axle drive flange.
