Forward Clutch Assembly: Reassembly
- Coat clutch piston and sealing rings with transmission fluid. Install piston assembly into drum using a twisting motion. On all models except with E-mode, position diaphragm spring in drum with convex side towards bottom of drum. Install flat retaining circlip.NOTE: With circlip installed, diaphragm spring should be lightly tightened. If not, replace spring. For application of Steel and Lined Plates, See FORWARD CLUTCH PLATE CHART .FORWARD CLUTCH PLATE CHART
Application Steel Plates Lined Plates With E-Mode 3 4 All Others 2 3 - On models with E-mode, install spring support ring, spring retaining ring and spring assembly and spring plate. Retaining ring and springs must be installed with small diameter end of springs up (towards spring plate).
- Compress spring plate and install small circlip. Install spring and spring washer. Ensure that spring and washer are installed with convex side down (into drum).
- On all models, lubricate with transmission fluid and install thrust plate and 1 lined plate in clutch drum. Thrust plate must be installed with convex side down (into drum).
- Install planetary ring gear into assembly, engaging inner splines of lined plate. When installed, lined plate should be under retaining edge on outer splines of ring gear.
- After soaking in ATF, install remaining clutch plates, starting with 1 steel plate and alternating lined and steel plates until all clutch plates are installed. Install pressure plate and circlip.
- Position dial indicator on assembly with indicator pointer resting on pressure plate. Zero indicator. Pull up on planetary ring gear and note reading on dial. End play of assembly should be .020-.035" (.50-.90 mm). See Fig 1 .
- If end play is incorrect, replace pressure plate (large circlip on models with E-mode) with selective circlip of required thickness to bring play to proper specifications.
- Pressure plates are available in thicknesses of 2.36" (6.0 mm) to .299" (7.60 mm) in increments of .016" (.40 mm). Circlips for models with E-mode are available in various thicknesses between .059" (1.50 mm) and .138" (3.50 mm).
- Assemble direct/reverse clutch with thrust washers and forward clutch onto oil pump. Blow compressed air into oil port and check that clutch piston audibly compresses clutch plates. When air pressure is released, ensure clutch plates release and piston returns to original position.
